Tomeheaven - 80 Early Spring by Razin

Ah, you again! To be honest, I would have thought the Queen would have killed you by now. No offense to you, of course. The office of Royal Messenger just happens to have a rather quick... turnaround. Anyhow, your usual room has already been prepared, so feel free to look around all you like.

Point of Interest: Incinerator Moat

I'm sure you noticed the cleanup we did outside the walls recently. To be honest, we were fine just covering the mountains of junk with leaves and leaving it there, out of sight. We changed our minds after the large goblin assaults of this year. Not because we ran out of leaves, but the caravans had already been complaining of wagon axles getting jammed with goblin socks, and we thought if it got any worse they would stop coming altogether.

That's when we channeled out the magma moat, mainly so we could chuck the green wretch's unmentionables in there, rather then piling them up inside. The Marksdwarves say it helps keep the invaders at a good distance from the wall, and our trader was overjoyed that he wouldn't have to try and keep a straight face while selling those things to the humans.

As a small side note, if you hadn't happened to look down, our gabbro bridges have been replaced with iron ones, mostly for dignities sake. - Razin

Construction is well underway, I'm sure the queen will be pleased with news of its progress. A warning has been issued that staircases built on successive levels can be hazards for dwarves who may slip, or be pushed, from the top; as such my forts employ either a central spiral stair, or a succession of alternating up/down stairs.

Good work defending the hillside, its always challenging trying to close the holes around a mountainhome when your back is against a rolling hillside.

I like the emphasis on diamonds in construction as opposed to the more traditional squares and rectangles. Very cool!

Thanks! I'm not sure what I would do without this particular tile set, the smooth diagonal walls really help open up more design variety.

Δ 18. Prisoner of the Spire
Now, I know you're dieing to ask about the Spire, all the other visitors have. Just promise not to tall anyone else, unless the Queen gets... demanding. We're hoping to bring in tourism with a grand unveiling of a mysterious construction.

Anyways, that is indeed our captured Bronze Colossus suspended in a glass cage within a hollow glass tower. don't worry, there are other restraints upon the great creature holding it there. He'll break them eventually, but it should keep him from damaging his cage until it won't matter anymore.

We couldn't bring ourselves to destroy this prehistoric wonder, but we certainly were not going to set it free or trust a few flimsy bars to hold it. Thus, the hollow spire you see today. We shall fill this spire with the earth's molten blood, so that if the colossus tries to smash it's way out, it will be destroyed in an instant. The structure is made of glass so that the creature understands this, and does not inadvertently ruin itself, and is preserved for all time.

Yes, we know the scaffolds inside it are not exactly beautiful, but they should melt once the tower is complete. The lower chamber of the spire, directly over the trade depot, will need to be reworked to fill the trade chamber with more red light then would be created if we filled the tower now. In addition, once the tower is filled, it will be capped and a lever placed at it's peak, reachable only by the spiraling obsidian walkways, around the tower, and a perilous climb up the smooth glass slopes...

What, did you think I would tell you what that lever did? Of course not! Why, that would ruin the suspense of next year's visit (assuming you survive that long. Just saying.). At any rate, the whole structure will make our humble city that much more famous, and represent the glory of dwarfish might to all who visit, and perpetually bath our valley in the red glow of lava.

With any luck, it might also scare those elves into being more polite. - Razin
Δ 17. Prisons and Magma-Duct (3)
Worry not, the glory of the spire will not be marred by the magma-duct when all is complete. It will be difficult and dangerous, but the whole thing should be deconstructed after there is no longer a use for it. If you're interested in seeing our engineers and architects at work, feel free to travel up the slope and look around.

While you're up there, we've also got more... happy news, for Her Royal Highness at least. We know how the Queen is very enthusiastic about the law, and specifically punishing those who break it. We figured out city was getting too big to skirt the eyes of the Her Majesty much longer, so a prison is being prepared, and a few guardsmen will be appointed one it is complete. - Razin
Δ 15. Courtyard Improvements (1)
Most of Tome heaven's efforts over this past year have gone into subtle improvements to the courtyard, and one large one. You'll surely have noticed the spire as you approached, and the fact that we've moved our trade depot into the base of it.

We've, after the merchants got over what they saw in the spire, gotten various reactions. The Elves thanked us for having the sense to do business out of the rain (snotty pricks, the Queen ought to declare war on those treehuggers). The humans marveled at our new Obsidian trade depot. We can't wait till they come back next year, then they'll really have their socks knocked off (and sold back to them).

We've also begun building paths between various structures, to reduce the amount of mud that gets dragged everywhere. With 101 citizens, and 17 of them children, it was getting a bit too filthy, even for us. These sturdier stone paths being added should cut down on this quite a bit.

Lastly, if you begin to miss the great tower cap forests of the mountain home, feel free to sit in the park being created, behind the obsidian maker. We noticed that spores from the river had apparently taken to the dark, damp crevices there, and have been slowly expanding the cave, and then making it suitable for a small forest with the runoff from our obsidian factory. Just be sure to listen for the calls from the control tower, lest you get a bit too...damp. - Razin

15. Warrior's Memorial

( 77 Early Spring to onwards )
You may have noticed a group of statues on your way in, depending which path you took through the forest. Oh, you missed it? Well, had you come from the north-west, you would have seen these statues. This marks the first battle to take place on our new home. In Mid-Autumn of last year (76), the caravan from the mountianhome was ambushed by the filthy Green Menace, you may have heard about it back in the city.

Be the time our lookouts spotted it, the trio of goblin bowmen and a horde of wrestlers had butchered most of the civilians. The brave caravan hammerdwarves managed to break the cowards' resolve and forced a rout, though the few that survived were mortally wounded. By the time we got there, there was but one surviving dwarf, and his mule. It took a while to get the story from him, as he had gone quite mad. Our would-be rescuers ended up being witnesses to his wedding (to his mule, who also seemed to have lost it's mind).

After salvaging what we could (we desperately needed the animals and supplies we had ordered from them the year before), we decided something should be done to honor the brave soldiers who drove the goblins away from our home. These statues were commissioned to do just that. Admittedly, they're rather plain, as our mason was still learning his trade. Though if he asks, tell him it does indeed look like three armored dwarves killing a green goblin. He's a rather sensitive lad. - Razin
