Coming along nicely I think. 33 dwarves. The first wing of my bedroom area is built, I now have a cistern to stockpile water (no stream here, notice!), and my above-ground fortress gained a few towers and parapets. My fledgling army also had its first victory, when 4 completely untrained dwarves killed a cougar that was harassing woodcutting and herbalism. I didn't take an anvil at embark, instead using the points for a much greater pile of supplies. I got my anvil in this year's caravan, as well as some leather, but annoyed the caravan too much to finish trading for some extra meat. I have begun processing thread and cloth to make high value trade goods.

Momaw says he's build on an island in the eastern sea. I think its very red, and open, there are no goblins to abuse the lack of defences though.
And no, I didn't read your description.
