Being new to the game, I am experimenting with faster methods of mining. I figure that if I can drop a chunk of rock far enough it might be reduced to rubble...

Fully expecting these to be my last words, I carefully evacuate the area and then pull out the support, and... nothing happens...
I had one corner in the bottom right corner, two corners touching shouldn't support anything, and I have mined it out, so now, as far as I can tell, it is just levitating...

Oh, while I'm here, does anyone have any thoughts on the fortress, I am trying to develop new and exciting forms of cave adaptation, it was a real trial working without water, but I finally found some good dwarven subterranean water and it feels so good to have evaded that filthy surface stuff...

Turns out I missed a spot, on the 9th level, must have checked it a dozen times...
