Tomeheaven - 78 Early Spring by Razin

Map Description:

Hello again, messenger. You'll be pleased to find that this year's stay will be much more comfortable then your last, and hopefully the good news you shall bring the Queen will keep her from calling on the Hammerer if you forget to shut the door all the way...again. Good to see your arm is healed by the way, the account of the incident the migrants gave us was...painful.

Point of Interest: New Defenses and Tragedy

You should be able to rest much easier during your stay, as the defenses have been significantly improved. Our barracks has been moved from an unused workshop room to a proper gatehouse, and the walls have been thickened and fortifications added to the top. Also of note are the bridges at the ends of the entrance. With very careful timing, these can be swung up to seal invaders in, where our marksdwarves can pick them off. It isn't ideal, and perhaps a bit cowardly, but you never know when the next attack will be too strong to fight fairly.

Last season, the Second Battle of Tomeheaven occurred, just outside the gates. A goblin kidnapper got caught in one of our cage traps, and a peasant went to collect him. Unfortunately, another thief showed up at the same time, startling that peasant into running out into the field. The whole thing seems to have been just a clever diversion, as the hapless dwarf was quickly mauled by the waiting claws and flails of hidden goblins.

Our brave warriors charged to the field to avenge our losses, but the goblins were not yet done killing innocents. Our Hammerdwarves are a married couple, and they had a child. Unknown to anyone, their boy followed them out into the battle, and was strangled by a goblin before his parents could save him. Something snapped in both parents, and the things they did to those Goblins were unspeakable. The wife still hasn't recovered. She did brighten up a bit though, once we told her we would sacrifice our new captive in the first run of the obsidian pit, to dedicate it to Armok. - Razin

Construction is well underway, I'm sure the queen will be pleased with news of its progress. A warning has been issued that staircases built on successive levels can be hazards for dwarves who may slip, or be pushed, from the top; as such my forts employ either a central spiral stair, or a succession of alternating up/down stairs.

Good work defending the hillside, its always challenging trying to close the holes around a mountainhome when your back is against a rolling hillside.

I like the emphasis on diamonds in construction as opposed to the more traditional squares and rectangles. Very cool!

Thanks! I'm not sure what I would do without this particular tile set, the smooth diagonal walls really help open up more design variety.
