Citybite - 380 Early Spring by Phrog

Map Description:

Citybite is bigger and better than ever. It is almost a guarantee that the fortress will see the arrival of the king this year. Of course, it is also almost a guarantee that the king will proceed to die of old age soonafter now that he is 138 years old.

7th Granite, 380: What is with the Duchess Consort and her love for animal traps?! She has demanded yet another one to be constructed and must have ordered the production of no less than five during the previous year. We will soon be drowning in the things. If she loves them so much I wish she would keep them in her mausoleum so they can rot with her for all eternity.

18th Slate, 380: As predicted, king Sazir Searchdikes has arrived. We are officially a big deal.

13th Hematite, 380: It has been brought to my attention that Citybite has violated an agreement we have with the elves of Avetho Wiyi, also (appropriately) known as the Desert of Indignation. While we had agreed to limit our tree cutting to 121 trees the enthusiastic dwarves chopped down seven in excess of the limit as they cleared some space for the monument commemorating the slaying of Ertal Jadeheated the Diamond Glow (we have been considering erecting an underground shrine celebrating the slaying of the cyclops Otik Controlquested the Persuader of Gems as well). I expect the diplomat's words to be sharper than ever next spring, but it will take more than an overgrown fairy's anger to get to Citybite.

16th Hematite, 380: Oops! We specified the tree cutting area a little too far to the south! Maybe if we offer the elf emissary some of our finest liquor he won't mind so much.

10th Malachite, 380: We had a near kidnapping today. A child was deconstructing a wall outside when a snatcher proceeded to swipe her and stuff her in a bag. Luckily the Granite Bells was close enough to inflict serious pain upon the intruder. More unsettling than the kidnapping is the fact that the child has somehow amassed over six thousand dwarfbux to her name. Hopefully she is not running some sort of Ponzi scheme.

13th Malachite, 380: This is starting to get ridiculous. The same little brat has been kidnapped no less than three times now. The mayor is now offering contraceptives free of charge.

14th Malachite, 380: Apparently in the confusion of the mass kidnappings there has been some child-related duplicity. Apparently the same child hasn't been kidnapped three times but at least two different children were kidnapped. A goblin kidnapper who I had assumed did not have a child that the Granite Bells gave up chasing actually made off with one of the children. It looks like I will not be winning the Father of the Year award after all.

17th Malachite, 380: It is an all-out war zone out there. Amidst even more kidnappings two goblin squads ambushed the fortress. Luckily I had the foresight to station two extra squads at the entrance while the Granite Bells were halfway across the map killing another kidnapper. It is amazing none of the civilians outside were hurt.

16th Timber, 380: The puny brook is not being very cooperative. It will no longer fill the previous water reservoir to anywhere near a full level even if the floodgate leading to the moat is closed. We will have to attempt to dam it if Citybite will ever be able to use it effectively.

14th Moonstone, 380: The cowardly goblins have sent a proper siege after having their ambushes earlier in the year rebuffed. They have even decided to send some of their leaders against the gates of Citybite. It is strange seeing the traitorous humans leading packs of goblins down the mountains toward our fair mountainhome. Their numbers were many and varied, sporting a group of bowgoblins and an elite human crosbowman to bolster their melee ranks. Understandably, this made the siege operators on the first line of defense rather uneasy.

Two of our marksdwarves broke rank for no discernable reason and went outside the fortress, barely missing a group of bowgoblins, wrestlers, and a human hammer lord as they ducked out of the siege corridor to points unknown. They proceeded to follow them as a third member of their squad went outside (again, all dwarves had been forbidden to venture outside of the fortress. Why they left was a mystery...). Needless to say the dwarf got shot and killed almost instantly. The other two thought it would be a great idea to head back towards the enemy and got into a firefight, shooting and killing four goblins before they themselves got pounded and stabbed into a fine paste. If there was any benefit to this, the squad managed to bunch up the enemy to give our siege operators a chance to strike at them. Of course, they failed miserably save for one bolt which killed four goblins and disarmed (literally) the human elite crossbowman. The dwarves managed to get off a second volley after the first wave of goblins passed, but predictably they choked under pressure and missed everybody.

The goblins then proceeded to make their way inside the fortress. The human local ruler and spearmaster leading the charge fell into one of our cage traps (which will make a fine addition to the zoo). The human hammer lord who had slain the marksdawrves that ventured outside against orders also was captured, thankfully. We will make plans for him.

While most of the goblin troops scattered a lone group of macegoblins, wrestlers, and a human master lasher ventured under the entrance bridge as they made their way to the gates. Unbeknownst to them, the order had been given for the soldiers to go outside and the marksdwarves shot and killed half of their squad as they walked underneath from behind.

While our losses were comparatively heavy (three stupid dwarves and a cat), the enemy's losses were even more so and included two killed and two captured leaders. Maybe now they will forget about assaulting Citybite as it is certainly a hopeless endeavor on their part.

6th Obsidian, 380: The execution chamber for goblin prisoners is at last complete. While we work on the more elaborate projects for future goblin-related activities, this room will suffice for now.

Its gonna be hard to stay away from that cave considering how huge it is.

It won't be hard to stay away because of the size. The map has plenty of room. However, it will be hard to stay away because of the temptation of sending in some dwarves to stir up some mayhem.

So how is your "Cave extermination unit" doing. I still see some trolls dwelling down there. (be sure to make a vid of your dwarfs going through the tunnels killing everything in their way.)

I've been deliberating if I want to send in the troops (the Granite Bells again. They have the best equipment, skills, and some thirty kills to their name including one dwarf with twelve) or if I want to flood the entire cave with magma for hilarity's sake. Sending the troops in would be fun, but I'd also have to worry about forbidding everything in there beforehand so civilians don't go running in blindly. Then I'll have to manage a bunch of hauling jobs that the slaughter would invariably create (or, again, I could forbid the hell out of everything). Right now I'm leaning towards nuking the cave from orbit and letting Armok sort them out. Hey, at least the fort will have awesome engravings of everything melting if I do!
