This is my current project. It's going to be a gigantic circular fort (underground) I halted digging to gruntle the disgruntled dwarfs, I'm building my first level of housing. underneath I plan to build another level with houses on the outside and a fairly big dining room in the center.
I plan to add retractable bridges as defense. I know this sounds dull and overdone, but I have a secret twist that i will reveal at the appropriate time. - magic dwarf

"I regret my decision to dig him out. Next time I will not be so lenient. "YOU MESS UP, YOU DIE!!" will be new policy for any one too stupid to realize which side of the wall they should be on."
Sadly, that doesn't work terribly well...Dwarves have no notion about what side of the construction they should be on.
You can bypass this by either a) having mechanisms, a lever, and a mechanic ready immediately to hook up the floodgate to let'em out or b) taking advantage of the fact that N, S, E, and W are always preferred (iirc) to the diagonals.
I don't recall their choice preferences from heart, however, so I forget which of the N, S, E, or W they choose first.

What I do is build a wall on the side you don't want them on, then suspend the construction. They don't stand on that side then. Once you are done building on the other side, just remove the wall and you are all set! No babysitting involved.

CAme here from the forums. You can dam the lava flow and the rest will dry up. You have solid rock above there as far as I can tell so if you drop a solid wall of undug rock where you want the flow to stop it should work. Just make sure that your miner doesnt fall in the lava while you cause the collapse, use a support and lever if you have the time.
