After a bit of a hiatus, I have returned to DF. This is actually my second fort since returning, as I gave up on the first one, because it turns out sieges don't care if you've bothered making any defenses or not. Plus I was basically out of wood, which is a problem when you need some 200 blocks of it to build a single-level bedroom complex. This fort solves both that problem and the defense problem, by not having an aquifer so I can go underground, plus having the magma pipe at the surface so I can make use of it's toasty goodness, as can be seen by my moat.
A nice little surface building to secure the entrance to my fort. Given my lava moat and proximity to 'imported' iron to melt down, it seemed a good location for my magmasmithing operations. It also serves as my barracks, as was decided when I finally tired of that damn human siege and started up a military. The fortification rooms proved quite effective, even with untrained marksdwarves, though their effectiveness against opposing marksmen are as yet unknown. - NEO|Phyte

You can download the compressed map file: 2008-11/neophyte-Syrupdwellings-region2-203-37768.fdf-map but you will need the .NET version of SL's DF Map Compressor to convert to the .PNG image format.
