I made the major mistake of accidentally abandoning my fortress as I was getting well into the swing of things. However I will carry on and have reclaimed the fortress. This map shows Gearedripe as it is the moment after reclaim.
If you are wondering what I am doing on this map, I am:
1)Basically digging out a lake into the ground with the intent of making it as lifelike as possible(done)
2)Building a castle out of the limestone recovered from the dig on the center island (in the process of)
3)Going to fill the pit with water from the brook and wa-la a man made island fortress is created.
4)Turn on invaders again, Train up a sizable army and constantly fight off the horde of enemies that are a result of the Civilization forge mod I am using.

A small suggestion, when channeling the brook, put floodgates so that you can close it off after it's filled, otherwise it's gonna be flowing and look all weird, if you close it off with floodgates, it'll be still.

Suggestion: you could, for, say, the gatehouse, scrap the natural (man made) island all together. Dig down a few z levels, and make the foundations there from constructed stone.

Great suggestion. I wish I had thought of that before but now I feel it is too late. I don't really want to deconstruct my gatehouse as it seems like too much work. Maybe ill do it at a later point when I have finished with the main castle area and have time to spare.

can't you build a quarry outside the lake? I know you are going for natural, but even real castles had to make quarries to get their stone. You could try and do a real looking strip mine for limestone in that big area in the SW corner.

Before filling the lake with water, you might want to remove all the stones left there. The lake bed will look unsightly otherwise.
As for the limestone shortage, the island to the north-west looks rather... out of place, doesn't it? Oh, yes...
