D'oh! For some reason I looked at this map and thought there was simply a surface 'stockade' without going up any further Z-levels. *feeling foolish*

Judging by the 3dwarf image, its sort of a rounded pyramid within a hollow rounded pyramid. =)
Looks like it was a lot of work. Keeping the outer walls roundish must have been challenging!
