Year 6!
Work Completed in 1056
- Started permanent metal and glassworks.
- Prepared to melt more water.
- Made more obsidian furnature for nobles.
Outline for 1057
- Finish furnishing all bedrooms.
- Finish setting up new workshops.
- Continue dumping needless stone and items.
- Continue smoothing out interior levels.
- Turn bottom level of the fortress into a reservoir.
Notes:
- Playing this fortress is becoming more and more difficult; the game is stuck at 10-15 FPS and completeing a single year is proving to be quite time-consuming. I am leaving the temperature off whenever possible, and locking up all my animals.
- I have *way* too much junk cluttering up my fortress. I will start dumping excess furniture to reduce storage needs; I can't make bins fast enough!
Defenses and trade depot. Has resisted all sieges without much difficulty so far. - Charrat

Looks like a good start on a really tough map. Hope things go well for you and your stunty minions.

Please tell me what color scheme are you using!

Old Dwarf, I am using "Another Scheme" that is up on the DF Wiki. =)

Yes, that is quite an insane fortress you have.

Awe inspireing fortress. I get annoyed when the fps hits about thirty so its pretty persevering of you to remain until its 4.
Those floating floors are strange are the bridges still built (as in can the withdrawn bridges till be supporting it?)?
Submitted by: Charrat - 2008-08-11 to 1072 Mid Winter
Yes the bridges are still there (retracted at the moment). I had thought that retracting the bridges would be enough to collapse the floors, but apparently not. I would have preferred simply using deconstruction or channeling to collapse the floors instead, but the dwarves tend to get themselves stuck in dangerous positions when I try that. =)

Someday, when I have an hour in which I want to think about Dwarf Fortress but not actually play it, I will attempt to really understand this fortress. I especially like how you hollowed around the magma pipe, that's some truly epic dwarven engineering.

This is godly.

i *think* that the water in your cisterns on the left and right need to get completely full (eg [7/7] all over) on the z levels where they are currently 5's/4's before it'll swell up into your chamber. (eg, on z level 4). And, of course, if you want to fill up the second z level of your chamber, then you'd need to get all z level 5 of your cisterns up to [7/7] first. Guess you'll need to melt some more ice...
Bloody awesome fort though

Hmm, that's odd. did you re upload the map or something?
Submitted by: Drone - 2008-11-22 to 1073 Early Autumn
I think water doesn't follow normal pressure rules if it has to go through a floor hatch.

You do know you can share points of interest across multiple years, right? I was a bit bemused at your opening message linking to an older version of the map.

sneakypete--I am going to try to melt some more ice and see if that helps at all. I didn't re-upload the map, does it seem that way? =P
Drone--I am afraid that might be the problem. If it is, I would probably have to drain the cisterns, remove the floor hatches, melt more ice, and refill the cisterns to make it work.
Markavian--I knew that it was possible, but I couldn't figure it out, and it seemed easier just to link to the last map. =P I just noticed the checkbox that makes POI sharing work, so I set it up properly.

Well, it said that the map was uploaded "4 hours ago" about 20 hours after i made my original comment.
it now says that the map was uploaded "24 hours ago", even though i made my second comment "32 hours ago"

If you edit a map description it changes the date on the map entry... not perfect, but good way of tracking recent edits. Sorry for the confusion...

By the way, I believe those floating floors won't collapse because there's a roof above them. Not sure, but worth a try.

this looks like a cool fortress.

Do you happen to have a list of how you broke out the stone separation by color? I would love to see your breakdown of it.

re: the patches of sand, apparently when you build a construction on the layer of rock directly under the ice layers, and then deconstruct it, the floor isn't rock but a random soil type. It's a bug. :( Enjoy the glass in this version though ;-)

Was the lava always under the surface or did you have to wall it off first?
Submitted by: Charrat - 2009-11-27 to 1073 Early Autumn
It is a magma pipe that I found and built the fortress around.
