We're planning to focus on making lots and lots of weapons and armours, and have all dwarves go into military from time to time and receive some military training.

I've been playing the first year, and really, it's not that spread out, is it?
I had to go a few tiles away for the bedrooms so they wouldnt be bothered by noise, and then i had to go further away for the magma and the forges...
I guess i should have channeled the lava closer to the rest, maybe one of my followers will be able to deal with it, or i will in 4 years when i get the fortress back :P

I'm not saying its spread out, its just that I had trouble following my way around the corridors... make's things interesting at least : )
I've got used to building things in as close proximity as possible, not that there's anything wrong with your design, its all about personal preference... and infact you've got with a very nice open workshop and farming layout that makes a lot of sense.
