• Δ 20. Moneydump Square
  The king wants my fort to have 5000 monies worth of roads before he shows up. I'm not fond of paving the forest while I'm already perpetually short on fuel, so these bare hilltops are a fine place to pave with whatever metal I can spare. - Shandrunn

  After I found out that coffins can't be cleared out for the next dead dwarf to occupy, I decided that burial is not the way to go.
  
  Getting rid of the corpses? No dwarves sad about rotting friends? I'm failing to see a downside to this. - Shandrunn

  This was the starting point of the construction, and the fort has been expanded outward. This means there's really no room to stick anything in anymore.
  Along the northwest side is the Designated Stinkhole: butcher, fishery, tanner and refuse piles within easy reach of the craftsdwarf.
  Workshops like the thresher, weaver and clothier are stuck in the southwest almost as an afterthought, just because there was room there.

  I've got one of these at each side of the map. There are walls all around to force goblins through them. Since finishing up the project, I've only lost a small handful of dwarves who were unlucky to be in bow range. - Shandrunn

  The meeting hall and shops. To the north, the Duke's quarters. - Shandrunn
• Δ 16. Execution pit
  Below the retracting bridge is a shaft all the way to the bottom. The modus operandi was to designate this a noble's bedroom, lock the door when he was inside, and throw the switch when he stepped on the bridge. It was unreliable and not used much.
  It has seen some more use for useless peasants and cheesemakers, who got drafted and ordered to station on the bridge. Still, it gives a rather big mess and is no longer being used since the drowning chamber was completed.
  
  The level below is designated a pit/pond for throwing caged goblins. - Shandrunn
• Δ 15. Basement reservoir
  Originally, the reservoir was on the left and the right side was farming ground. In 1053 or 1054 or so, a dragon got inside and broke the floodgate. After I'd made repairs and finally got rid of all the water in wrong places, I decided to turn it around. This was mostly to channel water to the east for a well in the meeting hall.
  
  The small room in the north was a drowning chamber. After a hammerer turned out to swim surprisingly well and denied me the convenience of a fast death, I put grates in and carved out a new drowning chamber right below it. - Shandrunn
• Δ 15. Mud Valley
  When a dragon broke into the basement and smashed the reservoir floodgate, my first priority was to get the reservoir empty so I could make repairs.
  
  So I made holes in the channel, where the doors are now.
  
  Yeah. Not exactly the best solution. It took me years to get the valley dry and the channel repaired. In the end, I drained the valley through ramps into a tunnel below that led to pumps back at the brook. The northern hole was dry and fixed first, which dried up the western valley. The ramps, tunnel and pumps kept the eastern lake at a constant level, so I put a hand-operated pump on top of the channel to pump water across to the west side where it could spread out and evaporate.
  
  Glad I'm done with all that trouble, all the water flow was hurting my FPS =| - Shandrunn
