Bootreign - 1054 by Cross Quantum

Map Description:

I've had several more fey mood dwarfs, all successful. Two were wasted on legendary mining and smelting; however, I did get a legendary weaponsmith!

You see, sometimes I like to have all my non-craft skill focused dwarves produce a single item in a craft skill that i want a legendary crafter for. In this case, my fisherdwarf had made a single set of bronze bolts. So, he goes fey, claims a forge, grabs some iron (woot!) and accessories, then sets about forging.

In the middle of the forging, a fire man spawns and throws a fireball at him. I draft everyone else nearby to defend him, and they duke it out with the fire man on top of him, in the middle of the workshop. The fire man is killed, my future legend is barely scratched, and a few moments later he emerges with... The Fatal Blood, an iron spear!

Hell yeah.

So now I have a legendary glazier, metalcrafter, and weapon smith. Things are going quite well.

Looks very, eh, architecturally stylish. I'm sure it'll look great once you've got it all excavated. I spent ages planning the fortress of Bodicetempests, trying to make it look like a 'castle'.

What tileset & resolution do you use? It looks really good :D

Those dwarves look funkaay!

I use 960x300, the tileset is the one on the wiki that says it was modified by Unknown bis. I also use the color scheme that comes in the Dystopian Rhetoric easy pack, but obviously not the object tileset itself.

I\'m trying for a more industrial look, so I want to have lots of piping and little chambers for controls and stuff. My buildstyle is usually pure efficiency at the cost of being ugly, so I figured I would try to emulate what epitomizes that in the real world.

Re: Bubble Bobble Badguy.

Wow, I can see it. Not sure how, I don't even remember what the sprites from that game looked like, but yeah.

It's actually going to be a park for my dwarves. I'm going to flood it seasonally to grow some vegetation, and have some permanent artificial ponds and creeks inside, probably with a tastefully placed monument somewhere.

What's with all the floodgates? The planned zones really looks good, makes the long passages look sensibly. If you imagine all the room plans were hidden you'd have a long twisting set of corridors and sparse rooms in the centre of your fortress. (A world away from what I'm currently working on!)

A park sounds cool. I'd be tempted to make a bigger one somewhere else. Keeping it flooded could be a pain, (emptying people out / away) each Spring.

I like having multiple floodgates in place just in case a monster comes along and knocks one down. It also helps in the event that a retarded kitten or something wanders into the floodgate and drowns on the spot.

Never neglect food production! I've lost hundreds of dwarves once the tipping point is reached. Hunger strikes everyone, legendary, noble, peasant, especially in an open supply system.

Ahh, yes, additional floodgates for protection. Makes sense! I had a discussion about floodgates on the bay12games forums yesterday... I hadn't suggested adding in multiple floodgates; the thought of mechanics slaving at a painfully slow speed to connect the mechanisms up chills me to the bone. ::shiver::.

Eh, food production is so stupidly easy once you know what you're doing that I actually prefer it that way, it keeps things more interesting. I didn't even plant my first crop until summer of my second year. Everything else was just a result of brewing/cooking gathered plants with a little fish.

Anyway, the new farmers are already producing a surplus so it's all good.

Yeah, I saw the zigzag pattern you use for your magma channel sometimes. I do something similar myself. I had it set up with as a traps + permanent steam room combo back when steam was instadeath.

With water I'm less paranoid, though I will trap up the insides eventually.

That's quite possibly the coolest artifact ever. All I got was a pine chest.

It's banded in maple. :(
