A simple fortress, if I could go back and do one thing differently, it would be starting on a not so forested map, every once in a while I have mow down a huge quantity of trees so caravans can get through.

You can prevent trees from growing on a path by building Paved Roads.

Which is what he's done GreyMario, but would you go so far as to build paved roads right around the edge of your map, just to provide caravan access?
