The outpost Rigothenor "Craftblueness", 2 years old today.

The past year's had its ups and downs. We lost one of our legendary miner/axedwarves to a really lucky hit from a kobold thief early in the spring. Shortly thereafter, 19 immigrants arrived and got busy with everything from a huge haulage backlog to the establishment of new industries such as clothing, glassmaking, and leatherworking.
Got three strange moods so far, all of which were successful. Unhappily, two were possessions - and for really cheap artifacts to boot. The third got us a legendary leatherworker. Turning out quality protection is what he loves to do - the rest of his time he's a farmer/brewer.
List of dwarves:
1 leader/trader/carpenter. Spends a lot of his time building roads.
1 legendary clerk/backup trader. Ditto.
1 Axedwarf (legendary miner cross-trained in axes and armor)
3 good miners (replacements for above)
2 legendary engravers - they'll become recruits as soon as more immigrants arrive and be replaced with new engravers.
2 legendary woodchoppers - same story here. We need to do a lot of woodchopping and, because it's not a trade skill, we can have lots of crosstrained woodchoppers.
1 legendary+ mason - he's been cranking out hundreds of chalk blocks.
1 armorsmith spending most of his time as a farmer/herbalist
1 metalcrafter spending most of his time farming and brewing
1 weaponsmith/bowyer (also does some wood burning)
1 smelter (also does some wood burning)
1 dedicated wood burner
1 legendary leatherworker with farmer/brewer day job
1 weaver
1 tailor
1 mechanic/farmer/cook - if he gets a fey mood, we're going nuts on the traps. Until then, he's a foodie.
1 glassblower/farmer
1 fletcher (who hauls 95% of the time - this will change once we start training up marksdwarves)
2 haulers trained as novice metal crafters - I want to decorate and make chains!
1 peasant hauler (became dabbling glassblower to service a strange mood)
1 baby
Most dwarves help with haulage at least some of the time; some spend most of their days doing this. Only farmers harvest (for skill increases).

Dude! Its so neat and tidy. The octagonal pattern is trendy and you've dug a massive star in the sand; good work so far. Why stop at 3x3x3 ? ... keep digging down! Later, you could hollow out the walkways between bastions and have bridges between the 'towers' that are formed in the gaps. How about that?

As a matter of fact, I /do/ plan a great tower. Just not in the 3x3x3 area...

I've located Orthoclase and Microcline. I also expect to find Olivine. The red stuff isn't petrified wood - it's blood that breeds.
I look forward to making stuff out of the Hematite and Limonite ores this fortress can easily spare...
