Carnagecloister - 1052 Early Spring by Dwarfbux

Map Description:

Well, it has been an interesting year, and not because of any incursions or anything of that sort. Even with a large number of farmers and brewers I have been chronically almost out of plants and booze, though I believe that is fixed for the most part now. I'm actually looking forward to the elven caravan this year so I can bolster my dwindled but stabilized stocks.

Things are rolling nicely along now. The first year was a bit hairy but I seem to have the critical number of dwarves I need to get moving at a good pace now. I have five miners who are mining nonstop, though I still need more. I have smiths to churn out picks so I should have more up and running in the near future. I have them churning out weapons and armor too but all that I have here that is weapons-grade metal is copper. I was wondering if I should substitute glass for copper for weapons, even if that won't solve the armor problem. I do, after all, have a small army of glass makers currently churning out large glass serrated disks to stuff the entrance hall to the brim with death. I kind of find weapon traps a bit cheap (but I do find them hilarious). I really hope to work on the gauntlet within the very near future. I have pages of notes and it should be fun for goblins or otherwise who want to make their way inside.

My tiny army is hilariously bad at this point. I think they have weapons now but they certainly cannot use them well. To be honest the impenetrable military interface from DF2012 was what prompted me to take a hiatus, though I am a bit more determined this time to get through it since I only have to learn it once.

No real deathtrap construction yet. Much of that will hinge on getting some walls built outside and getting the massive water reservoir and pumping system ready. Hopefully I will be able to focus on that this year.

I looked through old maps I submitted a long time ago on an account I have lost the credentials for and saw that I had written a rough journal of fortress occurrences. Might do that again if I don't end up being too verbose.

Point of Interest: Fortress Main Entrance

( 1051 Early Spring → 1052 Early Spring )

Still pretty much the same, for the most part. I learned that traps block trade wagons now, which admittedly makes things more interesting! This shouldn't really derail the plan to get the depot inside, however. Little additional planning and planning revision was required to compensate. Just one extra drawbridge and tunnel will be all that is needed.

Pretty sure the clay has been there for the entire year. - Dwarfbux

Ha ha, thanks everybody! I have been plotting all sorts of devious and fiendish traps and pitfalls for invaders (and otherwise) who trespass on the grounds. Right now the number of deathtraps going in the fort in various places numbers about 40 for invaders from above and cavern beasties from the second and third caverns below. About fifteen others (at least) will be guarding where all the valuables will be, mostly for adventure mode should I decide to share the map for people to try and crack as an explorer/reclaimer (so... hidden fun stuff).

For now most of these are too far down to make planning anywhere meaningful. I might have the redesigned invader gauntlet planned out (at least the underground part) for next year's update. I'm not suicidal enough to power downward and breach cavern #2 yet. If anything, given logistical issues surrounding having a long entry hall which I will expand on later, I have had to play much more cautiously than normal.
