It's been a long time since I've played DF. I'm relearning the Way of the Dwarf, and fighting off endless hordes of Forgotten Beasts with no steel armour. Fun!
"Make the landscape fit the dwarf."
I turned up the Megabeast setting to maximum and there have been an endless succession of Forgotten Beasts knocking at the doors.
They've accounted for a large number of dwarves; there was one which shed a paralysing, suffocating dust thing that killed all forty military dwarves, and a couple (one made of prase, another of vomit) which proved all-but-impervious to dwarven weapons.
It hasn't helped that these particular dwarves don't appear to have mastered the ability to wear breastplates or helms.
Anyway, there's a passage leading down to a flooded part of the second layer of caverns, way, way below, so once the first layer is suitably tamed, the future is bright... - Ambivalence
