The queen threw her knife at the world map, claiming that where it struck shall be where a new fortress will be built. Unfortunately she was a poor throw and stuck the farthest south location possible on the map. A frozen chunk of land next to the frozen ocean.
When the wagon came to a stop the dwarves instantly grabbed their picks and dug downwards. Nothing on the surface anyhow. Going around the aquifers the stairs eventually lead to the caverns below.
