Three years after the last update, three years of progress on the excavation megaproject. The grotto that has been dug out can be seen clearly with the DFMA's awesome side-view option. Miners reach the digging site via the up-down staircase and channel out the grotto one layer at a time to avoid cave-ins.
Something like a dozen or more dwarves have been given picks and sent into the deeps to mine. The more they dig, the more skilled they become, which accelerates progress. I fully expect this phase of the project to be complete within three more years, at which point the uppermost cavern layer will be exposed to the grotto (as in Weatherwires) and a few structures will be present in the deeps. - fidelcowstro

Is that purple ampersand a demon that I spy down there?

It is indeed. That's Nagnod Mountainpulp the Granite Crystalline Iron, master of the Scoured Spider, the goblin civilization that has been laying siege to Syrupurns.
