"Geargrip" - 1054 Early Spring by KelFreecanyon

Map Description:

The fort is a failure. Some idiot used up all the empty barrels (I had been keeping them empty for wine) and put plants in them. Every dwarf at this point is dehydrated and starving. I lost both of my legendary miners and the farm isn't coming along fast enough. I soon abandoned this fort.

Well, if you go for coal... wood isn't so much of an issue since you can make barrels of metal then :) Good luck though.

I make sure that the only stockpiles that allow barrels are alcohol stockpiles. This solves that problem.

...also, why did a lack of alcohol prevent your dwarves from drinking from the cave river?
And couldn't you just cook the plants in the barrels?

I've found that to survive a glacier fort, it's best to dig out a huge tree/herbalism area and to dig all the way to the magma fast. You need about 5 jumpstart the magma smelter/steel industry, 3 if you can find some coal (so save 5 logs from your initial wagons). Bring about 15-20 plump helmets and 1 of every meat (for the free barrels), cook the meat, then brew the plump helmets for alcohol. After butchering the mules, you should enough alcohol and prepared meals to last you until year 2. By then a large dug out area around the river should provide enough food with a proficient+ herbalist/plantgatherer.

Barrels can be made out of metal (presumably bronze and brass since they're so common) once you reach the magma.

You only need one log if you can find coal.
1 log = 1 fuel
1 coal + 1 fuel = 2 fuel
1 coal = 1 fuel (but must have 1 charcoal to start)
1 log + 4 coal = 5 fuel

1 fuel + 1 hematite = 1 iron
1 iron + 1 limestone + 1 fuel = 1 pig iron
1 pig iron + 1 limestone + 1 hematite + 1 fuel = 2 steel
