I'm uploading this as it represents my current state of the art in fortress design. It is built for function first and aesthetics second, but I've gone to every effort to make it look purdy anyway.
I'm working on a couple more forts and ideas that will build off of this one, but Ironhelm is the only 'finished' fortress I have right now.
Here's where the magic happens, and also where the majority of my design features are shown.
The main stairwell to the surface ends on this level, in a room inside the dining room, with a 2x3 draw-bridge that can be raised to shut off access to everything above here.
The stair further down into mines, caves, and lava ocean is inbetween my forges to the south of the dining quarters, past two draw bridges and several banks of doors, but is covered by rock so not visible right now. I'm still trying to dig past the magma-rock layer.
Living Quarters are in each corner block or 'octuple'. Noble quarters are just past the outer blocks, with the future king having a block of their own just south of the forges.
Prison access is on the north edge of the fort, with the sheriff's quarters in between the stairways. - Stromko
