Fortress: Frozenstone nil

The Pit

From here, I plan to dig to the bottom level. The pit is not connected to any interior parts of the fortress, including the extensive mining operations on the third level. To get to it from the fortress, you have to pass my main entrance; this way, any demons I unleash will not only have to get through the defenses visible here, but the main tower fortifications on the surface, before they have a chance to violate my civilians.

Dining Hall

Pretty standard dining hall. To the west is my metal and wood processing, to the east are miscellaneous workshops, mostly furniture and furniture encrusting. To the north are noble offices and dining rooms (only for the nobles I like, of course; the taxdwarf and the hammerer get nothing, and I don't even have a sheriff) as well as an artifact-only stockpile. The upward stairs go to the statue garden and zoo.

Recreation level

The zoo and the statue garden. To the sides I have my shops, the downward stairs go to the dining hall, and upwards is the path to the bedrooms.

This is also the level at which the brook enters the fortress, is split into two, and sent running down either side. Floodgates just before the split can close off the water supply to the fort; since the channel to the fort is on the other side of the floodgates, I have to open the other channel to the pit (the one that doesn't pass through the fort) whenever this one is closed. Otherwise, the channel to the fort fills up a second level, and releases a extra large wave of water when the gates are eventually opened.

Above-ground Tree Farm

This area is vulnerable to fliers and ranged attackers shooting from above, but otherwise it is only accessible from within the fortress (the access point comes off from one of the main towers). I eventually hope to wall off more of the mountaintop, allowing my rangers and carpenters to work without fear from ambushes without constraining my wood supply--which is important, as this map has tons of iron and nearly unlimited flux; the only thing limiting me from building anything and everything I want out of steel is fuel.

Upper Farm

To the east, the shaft that supplies sunlight to the first, failed surface farm. To the west, the second, successful farm.

The Road-trench

Except for some rock outcrops, this entire road is exposed to the sky, as well as to the two auxiliary guard towers that guard the first two stretches and to the two main guard towers that flank the road right before the entrance. It also goes over the chasm, allowing me to drop invaders into the depths at will (although this part isn't quite finished yet). Except for the blocked off tree farms and some cage-trapped, mid-air openings in the big towers, this road is the only path to the fort from outside.

Side view of the bridge

Bottom of the bridge

Here you can see both entrances to the bridge, as well as some fishing docks.

Top of the bridge

Here is the trade depot and the only entrance to the inside of the fort. To the sides are some stockpiles, which are above my metal and animal processing workshops. Above, the tower continues with a statue garden, meeting hall, barracks and noble rooms. To either side, lesser towers hold bedrooms and offices.

Through the aquifer

My first time dealing with an aquifer, and it happens to be a double. It was worth it for the six layers of obsidian beneath, though.

The dam

There's a little water from the last time it rained--raindrops fill up the riverbed just like they do murky pools--but otherwise it all stops here. It doesn't seem to have lasting effects on the world, although when you show up in adventure mode it does start to drain.

Fortress: Frozenstone nil

Entrance

The only passage between Frozenstone and the outside world. The yellow floor is a golden road, while the rooms on either side of it are the barracks.

Front view of the towers

Although the lower parts are mined out rather than built, these basically go from the bottom of the map to the top. A lot of the uses I had for them didn't really end up being needed, but they've still got their uses--like providing a venue for the official sport of Frozenstone, goblin dropping.

Tower hall and dormatory

One of the original reasons I built the towers was to have place to retreat to in the face of overwhelming attack; if I had to hole up in the towers and survive off my food supply, this is where my civilians would have spent most of their time. I was also hoping they would be used primarily by soldiers when this was not the case. Unfortunately, too many dwarves were crossing half the map to come eat in a sub-par dining hall, and it is now undesignated.
