Magmaworks Designs

I'm still working on my magmaworks plumbing designs, changing it pretty much every fort. I like this one because the "base" of it is a standard 11x11 square. The spokes make it easily extensible, later, if necessary.

Magmaworks

Nothing like free glass ... though I did accidentally turn all my leather into bags at one point, and almost lost a strange mood to a lack of stacked leather.

Magmaworks

This layout is my new favorite. Compact, but readily expandable.

Magma Vent Tap-Shaft

I assigned a number of tap-shafts to be dug across the andesite-capped portion of the map, and hit the magma vent with the first one.

Magma Hauling

The magma-tiles used to power the Ironworks in this fort were filled using magma-safe minecart hauling, as proposed by Sylth01 in this Reddit thread:http://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/39iopu/biweekly_df_questions_thread/cs5ckvj .

One comment of particular importance is that you need your bucket brigade to drop water from at least 2 z-levels up; if you only drop from the level one above, the magma will not turn into obsidian.

Magma Acquisition

Gotta have my magma. In yet another cheat-y move, iron minecarts are garbage-dumped onto this square, lava is pumped in to fill it then drained via the pump a level above into an evaporation chamber, and the minecarts full of lava and wheelbarrowed back up to the main Z-level to get tilted into custom-made heat ditches for the workshops.

Live Target Practice

I haven't done much playing with this yet, and I'll probably expand the room before too long, but live target practice is good times. Take a look at the refuse pile upstairs to see a couple of the "results."

It occurs to me that if I properly remove the goblins' equipment first, the fortifications are entirely unnecessary. Durr.

Late Depot

For the first time in a long time, I forgot to put up a depot before the first fall's caravan. I put one up right away following that, but of course by that point it was too late.

Killing Pit

The goblins are either pit-dropped from near the surface, for splattering, or from one level up, for military training. Raising bridge prevents them from running back up to mess with the civilians.

Jailbreak

Carrying a goblin to the pit dump point is no easy task (see Live Target Practice POI). The damn civilians seems entirely incapable of doing it. The goblin runs up the stairs, my soldiers slaughter it, and my beautiful marble is covered with blood.

On the bright side, dwarves revel in goblin blood, neh?

Ironworks

Technically, this covers all metal, and glass as well, but who really cares about anything but steel?

All of the inputs and outputs of this industry and quantum stockpiled in the same place, which seems to work well enough.

See the "Magma Hauling" POI for a bit more detail about the construction of this room.

Iron Ore Galore

This z-level (and the z-level below it) seem to have large iron ore deposits, which I do not want to tap until my miners are more proficient. Most of my forts tend to be up in the hills, and working with sedimentary layers is an unusual pleasure.

Since I will be clearing a large swath out of each of these levels, I expect it to be the eventual home of a few industries (stone and textile, likely).

Iron

The numerous veins of hematite have led to many, many, many iron bars. A lack of mineral coal means all steel production has been limited by charcoal production, but all in all, this embark has a nice mix of minerals -- shallow copper, deep iron ore with patches of aluminum, flux, clay, sand. Additionally, the lava is reasonably close to the surface (only about 40 layers down).

Initial Dig-in

I knew from the embark screens that the western side of this location is rife with aquifers, so I chose to punch through on the other side of the clear line of biome demarcation.

This location is currently getting strip-mined to allow for some covered farm plots on which to grow above-ground crops.

Industry layer

In hindsight, I should have put the bone/shell/skull stockpiles and and associated craftsdwarf shop on the north side by the butcher/refuse pile, and the carpenter shop on the south side. Oops.
