Fortress: Syrupdeaths apparentbliss

Plant Processing

I've discovered a fondness for plant processing and milling, something which I usually put off for several years at the beginning of new fortresses. Syrup and flour are good.

And, really ... given the random name I went with this time, maybe syrup production should be job number one at all points in time.

The Walkbridge

Traversing the long and winding pathway out of the fortress every time you need to get some wood just seems so unnecessary. Two problems: I badly need a war dog up here to watch, and during a "fire drill" I conducted nobody pulled the lever ... because it's outside. So, I need to move that inside.

Outdoor Defenses

Ballistas set up and loaded; more paved roads installed to prevent obnoxious tree growth; "shortcut" peacetime bridge somewhat fortfied with traps. Fortications and walkable perimeter added to the length of the "gauntlet."

The sad thing is, that in the most recent ambush, I just sent my greenest troops barging over the shortcut bridge to do vicious wrestling with the attackers. I guess when the sieges get more serious, I will be prepared.

I just this season added an extra "ring" of channeled pathway to the approach, even though it's likely entirely unnecessary.

Masterwork Pimping

What the hell do you do with a masterwork grate? Install it next to your main staircase, of course. It is completely superfluous, but that didn't stop me.

Water

Underground river located and tapped; well made. Cave spiders given a little bit of room to spread out.

A tower-cap farming system is in the most initial of stages, but since I didn't export the level (it not having any buildings on it), you'll have to wait and be surprised by its "splendor."

Web Collection

It seemed prudent to make a loom near to the spider webs, so that my weaver wouldn't spend so much time running back and forth.

Bronze

I haven't really embarked on a map with lots of granite before, so the whole "I can actually make bronze" thing is new to me. Indeed, I started exploring this higher up level looking for more malachite to use up all the cassiterite I already had.

The Graveyard

I think I have four or five casualties now; one fresh recruit that ran out alone to face a full complement of goblins, and the rest civilians caught unawares while picking up wood. Once I get towercaps up and running, there will be far fewer deaths.

God Save The Queen

Because I blundered into adamantine in the lower levels while exploratory mining, the queen showed up as a peasant. I had been preparing for this moment since running across the valuable metal, so her quarters were nearly ready by the time she arrived.

Strangely, shorting after arriving, she died of old age. Boo. Now she rests eternally in an artifact coffin ... so at least she's sleeping well.

The bad thing is, now I am not getting the dwarven caravan -- I get a message saying "nobody is willing to venture to such a death cursed place," or some such. Does anybody know if I'll get a new monarch, or if this is simply the end of the dwarven ruling class?

Stones and Blocks

I had nearly filled up 5 10x10 squares full of stone storage with mostly cassiterite ore before I finally found more malachite with which to make bronze. Now my extra "expansion" wings look pretty unnecessary.

Siege Engine Expansion

I'm going to add a set of catapults to the ballistas guarding the entrance. Not sure if they will actually be useful, but hey, why the hell not.

On a side note: training up siege engineering SUCKS.

High Environmental Impact

As you can see, my legions of haulers are ripping the sod to shreds. At some point in the next year or so I think I'm going to go "entirely internal" for a year or two -- let the grass regrow, the saplings mature, and see whether I can get by on the umpteen hundreds of barrels I've already made. Before I do that, though, I want to make sure my caravan approach is fully roaded/trapped up, so that I don't have to go and constantly wipe out saplings on it.

Cave Adaptation

As you can see, I'm not handling cave adaptation very well. I'm not sure if it was masons coming out to build the battlements, or a mechanic coming out to build a trap, or what. I should probably start making a light-filled statue garden in every fort as a matter of course.

Fortress: Sandbathed apparentbliss

Arrival

This seems like as good a spot to stop as any -- the mixture of limestone and andesite pebbles suggests granite and magma lurking beneath the surface.

We were warned that there would be no wood for us when we arrived, but we had no idea.

Water

Because the land is so flat, we spy a watering hole not far from where our wagon slides to a halt. It will be one of our first priorities to transfer this water into a cistern where it can be preserved from the desert's harsh rays.
