Indoor/Outdoor Confusion

Despite telling all my dwarves to stay indoors, a bunch of civilians ran outside during the last siege, past my ranks of soldiers waiting on the *safe* side of the traps, and got themselves killed. In future forts, I think I will try to put more of the approach to the base outdoors, so that the margin for civilian AI error is greater.

Hall of Heroes

Upon reaching the rank of champion, each soldier is assigned a tomb in this august space.

Food Overload

I have over 9000 prepared meals now, most of them roasts. I probably could/should lay off on food prep.

No Barrels?

I thought I was quite clever for saving barrels by designating this prepared food stockpile to be without them. I'm not 100% sure now, though, since there are so many flies hovering around them all the time. Even if the flies aren't causing wear, they are causing unhappy thoughts.

The Alternate Entrance

The main benefit of this is giving the dwarves a way back into the base that doesn't run them through a giant chunk of goblins near the wide entrancel

TITAN

I was excited when this megabeast spawned, but then it just got trapped in the first cage trap is stumbled over. Oh well ... I think it makes a nice decoration.

The Vault

I'm trying to get all my various artifacts down into here, so that if some thief somehow manages to sneak inside, none will be available up near the surface. I still haven't gotten the stockpile settings right, though, so lots of artifacts are still laying around the fortress.

Outdoor Defenses

This time around, I'm going with fully outdoor defenses. Hopefully this will keep the civilians somewhat more out of the way.

This all takes a while to set up, but I decided to just work on this first, instead of waiting for the first wave of immigrants. It did not occur to me until the trade caravan showed up that I need to be producing wealth if I want immigrants.

Agriculture Layer

Pretty boring thus far.

Manufacturing Layer

Some of this stuff (e.g. the dining room) will get reshuffled later, once there are permanent locations.

Outdoor Defenses

Still no soldiers to give the defenses teeth, but the structure is in place. I may add an extra turn on the south side of the barracks, I may not. The gauntlet is plenty long as it is, I suspect.

The main downside to this is that without roads in place, I got a tree growing in my caravan path without noticing, and missed out on the wagons. To combat this I'm now relatively aggressive with dirt road partitioning.

Hail, Trader Mason

My main leader / social skiller got a mood and became a legendary mason. This is of course a good problem to have, but I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to start training up a new broker type, or if I can live with a part time mason.

Giant Eagles

In my very first elven caravan, the hippies brought me two giant eagles. It's better to be lucky than good. Anybody know if they'll actually breed?

Water Hole

Fishing is of course a grand waste of time, but sometimes I'm too lazy to make sure that all my dwarves are actually being productive.

Also, my original hunter/woodcutter got badly injured in the first summer, and is still layed up in bed on the floor below (relegated to a corner by the leather works), so it's good to minimize the time wasted bringing him water.

Revised Deathtrap

This long stretch is bookended with bridges to be retracted once the goblins are inside the area, at which point they can be fired upon by the ballistas, and the barracks, if they are still close enough. I may beef up this entryway by putting up a walkway and fortifications along the walls of the long stretch, allowing marksdwarves to follow and harass them at any and all points.

The important thing, though, is that it's 100% outside. Maybe I won't get idiot civilians running out it during sieges.
