3 Bedrooms

So finally fearless leader figures out that we need bedrooms. 18 dwarves live here now, over double what the dorm will contain, and now he figures it out. Genius!
But they're dug. The miners went down a bit to see what was to be seen, and they found marble. A perfectly fine stone, long as nobody wastes it on furniture. So they think the walls will look nice, and it looks so pretty when it's smoothed over.
Of course, the first bedroom went to the least active dwarves, the glazer-turned-miner (ha!) and the leatherworker. It's not like we make much out of leather. But they went and hopped into that bed together. I'm just waiting for their kids to claim a spot. Then the two miners, you can see them now, Reg and Tun, snoozing away. I guess they've worked hard enough!
Oh yeah, and there's malachite, so we can make junk out of copper. Once we get the shavin'* furnaces going!
* [Shavin', I've decided, is a dwarven epithet. Makes sense, no?]

2 Fire clay

What was Tatooedbells thinking? Fire clay? We don't have any magma. There are barely enough trees to make beds. We're even having to make rock coffers, to heck with charcoal, and he gets this? What a waste! There isn't even an appropriate place to leave it, so it just sits there on the Trade Depot! Humph!

And the trading was Such A Mess! The wagons showed up, you could see the panic on Tun's face. He even recruited that new metalcrafter, whatsherface, to make more stone trinkets to trade back to the capitol so we'd have food and drink for the winter! What a waste of rock, to put it in untrained hands!
And then the guy buys us an extra copper pick. "Tun," I say, "what are you doing?" We barely have enough workers as it is! How can we..." And he gives to a glazer. A Glazer! A glazer who is clumsy, tires quickly, and gets sick easily! "Oh, it's not like she has anything better to do," he says. "It beats nothing." Pshaw! Make her into a stonecrafter, you fool! That's what I'd have done!

1 Meet Reg Lancetrade

Wait, what? You woke me up? Ach! What do you want?
To talk? Why do you want to talk to me? I'm just the bookkeeper. My only friend here is the manager. The rest, pshaw. Just here to do work so I can keep the books, y'hear? It's important work and worthy of respect, whatever these fools think!

8 Wagon

There it sits, made of wood that had never before seen the light of day. Have you ever seen such a lonely sight?

7 Silly Statue

So, I was minding my own business, when I heard a loud giggling coming from the masonry shop. I went to look, thinking I might get a chance to practice my new craft, and there was Reg, the big dorf, trying very hard to suppress his laughter.
"Hee hee, ho ho! Wait til Tun gets a load of this one!"
There, under his hands, was sizable statue of a dwarf, I presume Tun. I think he's the leader, he's been busy digging lately. Anyway, there was a statue of him, surrounded by worms.
It was rather grotesque. Still, I couldn't help but admire the well-crafted...statue. Yes. The statue. It was very impressively made.

6 Chink chink chink...

"I'm so not qualified for this," thought Tun. "Well, I guess sometimes leadership requires that you stretch yourself..."
"Chink, chink, chink" went the chisel.

5 Meet Reg Giftbronze

I was looking for someone else to commiserate with over the lack of smithies here, and I found Reg, milling around in the dining area. He seemed bored, and wanting something to do.
"Like the new place?"
"Yeah, it's ok."
"What do you do?"
"Blow glass."
"Beg your pardon?"
"I blow glass. You know, I make things out of glass."
"Ooooh, ok. I see now."
Just then, Geshud showed up.
"Excuse me sir, but are you crafty?"
We both looked at him strangely. "What?"
"I mean, do you make, you know, crafts. Stuff from stuff."
"I guess so..." Just then I had to run move some blocks for the tower. I heard Geshud say something about "bone bolts" as I went away. Better him than me. Bones are such flimsy, delicate things. I'd much rather get my hands on some iron bars, myself. Sigh...

4 Keet

It followed us here. I'm not even sure why, but Tun decided that it needed a place indoors. He seems to worry about it getting trampled by one of the livestock we brought with us, also muttered something about eggs.

3 Archery Tower

Next thing you know, I was approached by this muscular miner, who promptly asked me, "What are you good at?"
"Um, I make metal crafts."
"Oh, you work with metal! Great! You can be our smith?"
"But I'm not very strong..."
"Oh, don't worry. You'll grow into it." His slap on the back nearly knocked me over. "You can work the smelters to work on your upper body strength." He looked at my upper body with what might have been appreciation. I was intrigued.
"So, where are these smelters?" I smiled.
"Ummm...we're working on that. Meantime, can you handle stone?"
"Sure! I'd love to!"
"Great, go follow Athel over there. We're building a tower."
So I went and started putting blocks on blocks. I was embarrassed to see Athel was already better than I, even though he kept saying that he'd barely started this himself. Meanwhile, a kobold was sighted about 20 cubits away. Thankfully, it fled empty handed.
So many changes! Fortunately, even a dorm bed out in the open cave is better than what I've been sleeping on. And what a gorgeous Trade Depot! And the way the dull red of hematite streaks across the cave! I think I could be happy here...

2 Honey Badger Blood

Apparently the dog succeeded, and the badger bled out right here. Now every one who comes in or out has to step through a puddle of honey badger goo. Ew.

Edzul, who I had met on the way here, came along swiftly and carried the corpse to the butcher shop, where it's been converted to flesh and meat.

That's one way to make an entrance.

1 Meet Thikut Chamberinked

I'm a manufacturer of fancy metal things, especially jewelry and craft items. I've amassed quite a reputation for myself as a metalworker, and when I heard that there was a new fortress opening up, I thought to myself that this would be a superb setting for me to settle down, make a few friends, that sort of thing.
So I showed up, and immediately I hear a terrorized screams. "Help me! Help me! The battle rages!"
I'm not very strong. OK, that's an understatement. But you know? I couldn't just leave him there. So I ran, and saw this relatively scrawny dwarfman being attacked by a honey badger! I ran up, and the badger turned on me instead! The ungrateful wretch fled, and left me dodging the fell beast! I ran back to the fort, the monster gave chase, and I thought I was finished when this dog, the great big fat she-dog ran up with its white face and started scratching at the badger mercilessly. The badger tried to resist, but the dog pawed it so hard in the gut that it threw up right there!
And while it was doing so, the dog moved to scratching it on the head. It like it was trying to burrow into the beast's skull!

8 Livestock

While I was sitting in my stone throne, I heard the murmur and mooing of migrants.
What on earth were they doing bringing in a baby horse, a baby cow, and a baby freaking water buffalo? Don't they realize this is basically a rocky wasteland?
We'd already set our existing stock on the grassiest space in the region. And as you can see, it's not that grassy to begin with. Something is going to have to be slaughtered soon, which means we'll need more rock pots and barrels. Lancetrade (the other Reg) reminded me as he was going to bed that it'd better be rock pots, as timber is scarce out here.
And the migrants, which means more beds and dining, and more workshops, more digging.
Well, I'll keep digging, soon as my break is over.
Hey, is that a gem cutter? He can have the job. We'll give him a workspace in magnetite below...

7 Workshops

And then more digging. I've been resting, so Reg has done most of this. We keep hearing him shout from down there.
"More hematite! Magnetite! There's GOLD in these here hills!"
I also take some pride in this design, ensuring that further expansion is possible, or storage, depending. We'll see when we get there.

6 Animal Processing

So, Lokum is also our butcher. I planned and dug out some workrooms and a butcher station, and she got around to setting up that shop.
Nobody wanted the job of tanning hides, so we drew straws and it fell to Geshud, good sport.
As luck would have it, one of the first migrants, Edzul, was also a tanner. We could tell he was experienced by the way he smelled. She walked up to Reg and said, "And I can organize too!" Reg had to explain to her, gently, that we already had a manager, but we didn't have a tanner. She took it well, considering.

5 Farmwork

"Lokum!"
...
"Hey, Lokum!"
"Eh?"
"Where should the farms go?"
"Oh, anywhere."
"But where?"
"Why not try that vein?"
"Why?"
I like the aesthetics of it. Dig out the hematite to the end, and you'll see where the farms should go. I'll start planting, you know, after you've dug it out."
After we'd established a few shroom rooms, the manager helped her out with the planting. She's kind of hard to predict...I've never seen someone who could be so dour and flighty at the same time. She flits about like a silent sparrow.
