4 Technicolor Timber!

Just look at all that beautiful lumber.

Though what else may come when we bust in? As a miner, I must admit I look forward to seeing the cavern. I just don't relish seeing myself and my baby boy being eaten by trogs.

3 Woefully inadequate bedrooms

And even the migrants seem to happy, considering the circumstances.

2 The King and his Quarters

Really, these are rather fine quarters, especially considering that so many of the migrants are still cramming themselves into that tiny old dorm. And he's been understanding of our limitations: Not much to build with besides stone, and so much digging to do. And hey, we built all his furnishings.

1 Meet Doduk Bookcrews

I don't get the fuss. It's not like we get any kind of reward for finishing this job first. That king seems content, but he keeps coming and and "checking" on us. He conscripted the entire digging crew to polish stone. "Digging polishing, what's the difference?" So here I am, with baby Reg on my back, polishing away.

10 Coronation

And so here I am. I was catching my breath after the werebear incident, when a change came over me. My beard grew longer, my voice resounding, something changed, and suddenly every dorf around me stood back. I sat down, and felt an air of authority, and I knew I could no longer merely manage events here. I passed along that responsibility to one Endok Goldbulb, who seemed a tad too enthusiastic for the job. I noticed that he spat as I mentioned the previous manager's name, and some say he's not the most pleasant fellow. I can't see why...
But now I am king. And this little fort is hopelessly inadequate. We have no military, no dining hall, and our bedrooms are hopelessly inadequate. We barely have any coal! I fear for us in the coming days, and I fear for any dorf who denies me my proper accouterments and accommodations!

9 Cavern 3 with magma

Why must this tube only extend a few levels up from the magma sea? I was hoping for something that woudl require less digging to reach. Ah, well, that's life. I didn't come here expecting it to be easy. None of us did, if we were honest.

8 Cavern 2

This is more promising, though we feel we can never relax until we have enough fighters to take down a forgotten beast. Without even a shield, this cannot be safe.

7 Cavern 1

And we dug down to find water and lumber. Sadly, the first cavern didn't have much reachable timber, so we had to dig down...

6 Workshops and Barracks

And we have a barracks for them to train in.

5 Metalworks

We're hoping with these to build weapons and armor, so that we're better prepared for future incursions.

[I didn't think of it, but doesn't that kind of resemble a spaceship?]

4 Dining Hall to First Death

Around this time, it was decided that this fortress needed a proper dining hall. Crossfountains and Tun had some conversations about this, occasionally excited ones. They both seemed to agree that a circular layout was preferable, and couldn't agree much after that. So they started digging out a circular room, when screams were heard above. "It's a werebear!"
A werebear? By my beard! And no armor or weapons! We all ran inside, but sadly Reg, our bookkeeper was a little too slow and the beast tore him apart. I tried to shoot the beast with a bone crossbow, but even then it was too late.
We dug out a simple crypt and put together some coffins and slabs. We appointed a new bookkeeper, Zasit Brassfondled, from among the most recent migrants. Life goes on. The werebear ran after finishing its kill, hasn't been seen since, thankfully. Hopefully we'll be better prepared next time.

3 Migrants and Strange Mood

And then the elvish traders came, and some migrants. The elves didn't bring as much timber as we'd have liked, but we gave them some rock crafts and took what we could.
The migrants were many. Tun ran out to examine them. He seemed annoyed by the negotiation with the elves, and quickly picked out a trader among them. He happily handed over trading responsibilities, and the trader suddenly took a queer look, and ran for the crafters' workshop. We held our breaths as he gathered up a few bits of hematite, and then started screaming "Bars! Bars!"
I blame the elves for bringing this on. Surely some manner of elvish bug. Shavin' elves...
We panicked, Tun and Crossfoutains grabbed picks and quickly dug out some rooms for making charcoal and smelting metals, and thankfully we had some iron in time. Our fortress now has its first scepter, appropriately made of hematite, studded with iron. It is labelled "Bleedtrussed the Grand Syrups." I may have to claim it someday. Even now I can see it it there in the stockpile, whispering my name...

2 The goblins came

First we heard the gutteral growlings and shoutings, and screams of "Siege! Siege!" And we were all ordered inside. Some were not clear on what this term meant, so Tun made a diagram to explain. We all ran and the drawbridge slammed up before anyone got hurt, thankfully.

Tun shoved a crossbow into some random dorfs hands, and she held it like someone who didn't know where to go, he then ordered her to the tower, while we all cowered below.

Note, at this point, we are without armor or weapons.

But then she came down, to report a clear coast. And by my beard, her story was bizarre. The goblins had charged onto our field, running this way and that, and naturally they went after our livestock. We had just dug out a grasscave for the sheep, but it hadn't taken root yet, so all of our precious livestock were outside.

But according to her, shakily, she described out a crossbow wielding gob started ta king pot shots at our horse, and...the horse simply hopped out of the way! I have no way to picture this! Horses do not hop! Shave me and leave me in a hole, they do not hop! It was bizarre.

But the goblins seemed to think so to, for shortly after she said that she saw them scatter like flies from a swatter. And they ran away, and were gone. Nobody was injured.

Very strange indeed...

1 All Hail Geshud Helmsnarls!

My beard has been lengthened, it seems, as I am a monarch. I do not to whom I owe this honor. All I'd done so far is manage tasks for our little colony, but to call the shots? To...order the tasks that need to be arranged? This is a high honor indeed. I hope to live up to it, and to be appropriately compensated...

Still, it's been a crazy month. I will not blame my fellow dorfs for a lack of accommodation...for now.

4 Oops

So, we finally got a drawbridge so the goblins, should they come, won't just waltz in and slaughter us all. Great!
But you know what these sober* miners did? They duh the dry moat directly into the tunnel that connects to the archery tower! Brilliant! So if a troll falls in, our entire manufacturing center is toast! Fantastic!
At least one of our half-trained masons had the brains to wall it off before something awful happened...
