Fortress: Fountainnotch Tharis

5 Statues of Dead Stuff

Since we're out here, I'd like to introduce you to something that may seem strange. There is a fortress somewhere called The Imperial Finger. In that fortress, there are apparently a great deal of yaks. And these yaks die. And our masons make statues of dead and dying yaks. At first I thought it was just one mason with a fixation, but multiple masons have made them.

We've taken to leaving our large livestock out here, and after seeing the third one get massacred by goblins, it seemed fitting to use these to commemorate the deaths of so much fine livestock.

"But the statues are yaks!" you say? Pshaw. Yak, cow, water buffalo, what's the difference? It's all meat in the end.

The Giant Crow adds to the atmosphere, no?

4 Dead stuff

Admittedly, we just put down another one of those pathetic "sieges" of eight or so goblins. Our legendary squads made quick work of them. It always scares me to see them rush headlong at the crossbows, but they always come back alive, unlike their targets.

We've had a few larger sieges, but at this point there isn't much difference, just longer cleanup.

The garbage dump is conveniently on top of that ridge you see on the right there. One of the benefits of building alongside an active volcano, the incinerator is always nearby.

3 Glug glug

On that note, we do not lack for booze. 2,115 units. Here's where it all gets made. Also we have two workshops dedicated to spinning thread. We stay busy here, currently nine idlers.

2 Baa, Oink

That piglet is gigantic, with brown eyes, brown hair, and pale-white skin.

This fortress currently contains 3,317 prepared meals and 1,870 units of meat. We're all very well-fed here.

1 Likot Shippainted

"Eight years old. I was born in 128. My mom came here in Sandstone 125. She wasn't one of the founding seven, but she was part of the first wave of migrants. Might as well have founded the place, far as anyone else is concerned."

You see a girl, not particularly old, not particularly young, hauling a rock pot of wine. The pot is dacite, a common stone here. She's hauling it to the stockpile at the base of the archery towers, part of an emergency stash.

Mind, this fortress hasn't had any trouble with external invaders, partly thanks to her mom, so generally this is just another stockpile of drink. Still, it's good to be prepared.

As you look, you notice a small scar above her brasseyed face, which carries a strangely dulled expression. By dull, one does not indicate a passivity, but the stoic resolution of someone who has seen far worse than this. And something in the casual grace with which she hauls her load make her seem dangerous, as if she could weaponize it on a moment's notice.

8 Main Floor

So much to see now! As you can see, his royal quarters have been improving steadily. King Geshud has expressed satisfaction with the dining hall, thanks to some gold statues. And we swapped chert for gold in his bedroom.

And he insisted that my quarters be alongside his, something about keeping an eye on things.

And we've dug out some proper kitchen and distillery rooms, the smells to lure dwarves into the dining hall.

And a glorious golden well! It's the pride of every dwarf here.

7 Military

Thanks to the caravan, our combatdorfs are now clad and armored in cold, hard iron.

6 Coal!

So the last dwarven caravan came. There was no liaison, which was odd. And they couldn't get the wagons in on account of a boulder outside the entrance, which was also odd.

But they brought coal! Particularly lignite! I love the smell of burning lignite! It's my favorite thing!

5 Our Dining Hall

It's so smooth! OK, so it could use some more furniture, but we've only had a few years to work on it, and everything else.

4 Dead Goat

Outside the gate, someone stumbled on some bones. The were as a collar attached to the bones, so we figured the poor goat deserved a burial, if only for the sake of its owner.

3 That's a royal mausoleum

A plain chert coffin in a plain chert room. And a chert door, but what a chert door! Encrusted with chert cabochons, rose quartzes, encircled with bands of dog leather, menacing with spikes of magnetite!

Stasisguarded, guarding the someday-eternal stasis of our dear king.

2 Bedrooms

Sure, we could use a few more, but it shouldn't take long. As you may guess from the multicolored furniture, we broke into cave 2 for lumber, and it is not lacking!

1 Meet Morul Bridgedrevere

This place is great! Don't you know how great it is? I've got a great bedroom, a grand public dining hall, fine furniture, good friends, what more could I ask for? And now I've been appointed mayor of this wonderful dorfhole! Even without a proper office, or dining room of my own, I couldn't be happier.

5 Tragedy

Another goblin siege came, and this time they weren't frightened off by our amazing dodging horse. Most of the animals perished, and were so badly banged up that we couldn't butcher what was left.
