Fortress: Fountainnotch Tharis

19 Kilns and things

Stoneware has become a main export of this fort. Here is where the fire clay is collected and forged. And that pump is a neat little trick. It sends magma into that room there. And those monuments...one was a guy who fell into the magma channel while digging it out, the other took a bigger fall...

19 Workshops

One nuisance of this fort, to get from the workshops to the furniture stockpile (which is by the bedroom entrance) you have to hike all the way from the workshops (here on down) across the entry hall, down another flight of stairs, and around the great curve. It's really kind of ridiculous.

18 Kitchen and Hospital

Sick dwarves don't want to be too far from the food. That's the chief medical dwarf's office.

The statues are of dwarves. I think he uses them as models of what a healthy dwarf should look like.

17 Living Quarters

Before we move down the great curve, I should point out the living quarters, which start below and keep going down. Each room is engraved once occupied, simple four by fours with little variation. The captain's room is a bit bigger, you'll see it on the third floor or so. At the bottom the architect got bored and switched to a flat layout.

Oh, and those brass doors? That's the manager's bedroom. Aban Standardparched and his wife sleep there. You should see how that woman weaves, man...

Oh, whose office? Oh, wait, let me check the marker...

"In memory of Amost Dodokuvar
Born 102
Went missing in the year 130
Baron of The Puce Arch, 129 to 130
Loving husband
Admirer of turkeys"

Of course, we're a duchy now. I always wondered why they wouldn't grant us a duke. I guess once you lose one, that's it.

Ah well, I like my mom better anyways. She keeps us safe.

16 Need a drink?

Yeah, a story like that demands some socialization. Here's our main dining hall. The centerpiece is the single more valuable artifact of our fortress, Dullchopped:

"This is a giant mole bone table. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with trillion cut rhodolites and encircled with bands of cushion purple spinel cabochons, table cut red grossulars and cave spider silk. This object menaces with spikes of sheep leather. on the item is an image of a giant harp seal in giant mole bone. On the item is an image of emerald cut gems in cave spider silk. On the item is an image of forgotten beasts in steel."

Total value: 116,400.

Those pillars are black bronze. The engravings could be better, but ours were still practicing when this was put together. Nobody remembers the names of the ones who smoothed it out, but we're grateful. It has become a fine hall.

15 Rimtar Mubunkib

Another odd tale mom used to tell me. So, once upon a time, there was a werefox, and it almost got in. Imagine what would've happened if it got loose here? Well, the mayor, the vampire mayor, ran out to slay it. Sadly, the fell beast had already maimed the diplomat who came, bit off his foot (or was it arm?) Anyway, took a piece off him.

He was physically whole the next year, but apparently changed while meeting with the mayor in her cell (she was serving time for yet another murder.) The mayor killed the diplomat. This monument is so mom doesn't forget.

14 Saquar Uceongu Tilesh Gulgud

"In memory of Saquar Unceongu Tilesh Gulgud
Succumbed to infection, slain by the dwarf Minkot Blazedbolted in the year 131
First Gorge of the Coven of Amethysts, 57 to 87
Slayer of Endok Pointyship
Loving mother and wife
United with green glass"

Mom says she keeps this here as a reminder. It's subtle, she wouldn't want to embarrass the fort by having that name translated, but let me tell you. The name is Saquar Callhammer the Spams of Murdering. She was a vampire, killed at least seven dwarfs here alone. Good bloody riddance.

13 Mingkot Blazedbolted

Meet my friend Mingkot. Her birthday is ten days before mine. So as you might imagine, we're friends. She's a little more sensitive than I am. Still, she can speak for herself.

"Oh hi. Let me guess. You want to hear about...right. Well, it's like this. We were all kids then. Well, smaller kids. Really small kids, so I don't remember much, this place was scary. Everyone was screaming. Bolts were flying across the main hall. All the bridges were knocked down, so the fortress was just hanging open. You could feel the wind howl through, streaks of blood. It made me so upset. So I went to the mayor, not Atis, the old mayor. What was her name? I don't remember clearly. But she'd been locked away, seeing people in this little room down the hall.

So I went in to talk, but something about her, it wasn't right. It was just wrong, she was just wrong. I'd heard rumors, and I realized in that moment they were true. And so I lost it, I snapped. And I saw red, kept punching, kept kicking. She was wearing armor, but I didn't care. I could hear bones breaking, chains rattling...

She must've been locked up for something, because she was still chained. I don't remember where the captain was, must not have been one at the time for some reason...

When I came to, she was a bloody mess. I guess one of the wounds must've went septic.

We kids got together, and decided that Likot's mom would be the new mayor. So we went up to her while she was training with that copper axe she used to carry around all the time. I thought she would chop my head off, but she looked at us and nodded. And so she was the mayor, and now she is the mayor. And things are better now.

It was her idea to wall of that cell. Just as well, really.

11 Expedition Leader

---In memory of Id Thikutsibrek Abanzatam Amnek
Born 46
Died of thirst in the year 130
Creator of Bulbousrise the Sorceror of Weakening
Manager of The Squashed Gem, 125 to 127
Slayer of Kib Hallcrest
Lover of red pyrope---

That's his lover across the way, Zon Rimtartad. Mom says they could've married. So sad...

"In memory of Zon Rimtartad
Born 41
Struck down by the dwarf Litast Chambercities in the year 130."

130, 130, 130. Each one of them died in 130. What happened, you ask? I don't remember. You'd have to ask mom. There are a few others of us, but we were all kids, you know. Not the most reliable witnesses.

10 The Center of It All

Coming up from the booze and the farms, you come up to the animal processing center. A few more dead cow statues surround the butcher shop. The doors are a recent addition. So is the black bronze trade depot, it's been lead recently...

*shudder*

Mom finally decided it was time for change, and personally oversaw the design of the new one. I'm glad she could get around to doing that. The lead has been dumped in the volcano now. Shaved goblins interrupted that process. I look forward to being old enough to maim them.

Bookkeeper and manager's offices on the north, with emergency levers. Stockpiles of trade goods are on the right, and there's a little statue factory on the south, to save our haulers' backs.

Yep, those pillars are pure gold. And the monuments? Oh, those are the founders. Mom noticed that we had seven pillars, did the math, and decided to do some research. It did take sometime, but we got them all memorialized.

9Crops and Crime

Coming back from the towers, you see where we grow our booze. Down to the right, you can see why the captain is envious. A simple office of stone with a statue of one of his predecessors, a matching dining room.

And before they reach the cells and their wells, the condemned walk by a statue of Kib Wilttrades, the hammerer. What's in that walled off cell, you ask?

I'll get to that later. Let's cross the entry hall first, to get from one side to another...

8 And its mate

...that's the current militia commander's office. Not my mom, of course. People say that she must've been self-appointed.

The statues are a nice touch. I like his taste, nickel silver furniture and some fine statues. The brass is of Doren Breachcave the Brass Avalanche (no pun intended) and the other is of the current commander, Morul Drillmanor.

What happened to her, you ask? Hm, don't know that story. I don't think that I've seen the engraving for that one.

7 Office with a View

It's possible, my mom says, that the Captain of the Guard, Morul Bootscalded, is just envious of the finer accommodation given to the militia captain. Recently, Kubuk Standardpaints was given a new office, complete with bronze furniture (his favorite.) That must be his troll fur glove sitting on his desk chair. It's a wooden floor and walls of dacite and stoneware.

Perhaps as a gesture of appreciation, he's got a statue of my mom up there (on the right, opposite the peregrine falcon man) back when she was appointed militia commander...

6 Turning around...

Ah, as you turn back, you see this. One of the works of our fort. It began as two modest archer towers, circular following architectural whim. And then it just seemed easier to put all the archery facilities in one place, for swifter response.

And it sort of worked. One of our ranged units doubles as our constabulary, The Bronze Wheels. Last siege they didn't even make it into position, and we had to send The Silvery Walls to fill in, leaving their tower vacant. Lucky for us this was a minor siege marching in from one direction, so it wasn't a loss. Still...
