Animals Come Here to Die

At some point I noticed a ridiculous quantity of fish rotting by the river, so I turned this into a fish factory in addition to the butcher shop, and moved the farm workshops closer to the actual farm.

It get rather stinky.

Farms and Block Storage

That's the farm. Plants, animals, eggs aplenty. Once I broke into cavern 1, in the process of digging wells for the prison, I decided to dig out an underground pasture. And once I got the glass thing going I set up a few greenhouses, then made a few more "surface" plots accidentally by chopping down trees which allowed the infernal sun to sneak in, which is why I set up the additional plots to the south.

Further south was the initial block storage for the outside constructions, also the base of the main archery tower, also the tunnel to the second, more modest archery tower.

Prison

And here, at the bottom of the apartment block, is the jail. That's the office and bedroom of Kadol Workweaken, who has been our captain of the guard.

The only prisoner we've had this entire game is the ongoing troublemaker Ast Hallentrance. I think at some point the smoke fumes got to him, so he's continually picking fights and breaking things. As you can see, every cell gets its own well and I try to keep food around as they're occupied. It doesn't seem to have done much for his mood, though.

I've also noticed that a lot of the dorfs seem perennially unhappy, but this is the only one who has actually thrown tantrums, so far.

Kitchen, Clothes, Cave Spider

My first silk factory as a player. It was kind of funny, this particular beast wandered up from the caves most stealthy, then got her legs mangled in some weapon traps. She then limped, slowly, past a number of completely oblivious dorfs, until she got caught in a cage trap below the barracks. She's still missing two of her right legs.

That said, as you can see, all I have to do is send in the guard and the terrified monster becomes most productive. Just waiting for someone to hit the granite lever that'll seal her in and it'll be another round of production.

Kitchens serve the Tummy of Shingles. Keep going down and you'll see our first housing block. To the right you see the tomb of Onul Polishedboats, former expedition leader, and late owner of the Tummy of Shingles and Baroness of Fancyhammers. She was a legendary mason and apparently loved reindeer. Her slab is in the tavern above, by the green glass hatch cover.

Production Floor

A few more z levels down, and you're at manufacturing central. The main hall is 4 z levels high. Ramps at the southern end lead up to the manager's (left) and bookkeeper's offices (right) offices, which also happen to be where most of the security levers are kept. Stone and wood at the top, metal and craft at the bottom. The complex on the NE side contains the bedrooms for the starting seven and our first tavern, the Tummy of Shingles.

At the moment, we're down to four founders. As they die, their bedrooms have been taken over by the tavern. The baroness's bedroom is now property of the human whip master, Ibon Womanwildness. The Baroness's office and dining room are off to the west, and her tomb is directly underneath the tavern. She had a thing for green glass. The Captain of the Guard owns the other dining room.

Trade Depot

I'm kind of proud of this one. Dug out the depot first, then a large circle around, then channeled below, leaving a few pillars to hold the depot up. Added some water from our nearby stream and you've got a very nice little space, with the implied threat that I could drown the entire caravan with the flip of a lever.

Surface Entrance

The big round room is the barracks, also the ground floor of a substantial tower. The smaller round is the base of an archery tower, the two join up a few z-levels up.

The green glass dome marks the spot where the wagon started out, making the northernmost wooden bridge the oldest building in the fort. Corpse-pile on the east, adjoining a pasture for a few brave outdoor animals, garbage dump discreetly located between the lesser tower and the main cave. And some beehives because mead is tasty.

The statue is orthoclase, displaying the appointment of Ingiz Smoothnesssoiled to Militia Commander in 10. He's the current militia commander for the Comedic Fortification. At the moment I've got four squads of metal and 2 of archery, 5 dorfs each, all in steel and leather.

As you can see, we have a lovely waterfall.

25 Giant Parakeet

Why? Because that's the spot where we slew a forgotten beast, a slimy giant parakeet that went down in a beautiful hail of copper bolts. That's why.

26 The Ward of Healing

---This is a gniess statue of the Ward of Healing.
The item is a image of The Ward of Healing, the deity of fortresses, depicted as a female dwarf and four dwarves in gneiss by Meng Savotmuthkat. The Ward of Healing is laboring. The Ward of Healing is surrounded by the four dwarves.---

This is our statue garden, depicting our local history. It's a peaceful place. I rather like it.

25 Memories

And here's the final resting place of our dead. And yeah. 130. What a year...

You can see the story here, the string of monuments to the vampire's victims, a few folks who fell in the construction of the Clay Dome, and we think it was the the death of Endok Rulatis in 129 that started things off, he was killed by a Giant Olm./ Someone else killed the olm but...I'll have to do more research, but it was shortly after that that everything went crazy. A year of madness, it took so long, but it was only a year. And all that remained was the old mayor, about 20 kids, and me.

You can still see the kids, the ones with the haunted look. My daughter is one, thankfully my son was born a year after, last memory of my beloved husband Olon. Nobody knows what happened to him, but it happened in 130. And I was walking around. Likot just followed me around. She's handled herself well, I look forward to training her in a weapon someday.

We had a tomb for the baron, but no idea where his body went either. That brass coffin lies empty.

We've had to carve so many slabs over the years, and so many coffins. I had to do the first myself, and then migrants showed up. Marvelous! There was plenty of food and booze, so we sealed ourselves in and devoted a full year or two to burying the dead. One little siege in the meantime, killed one axedawrf. I remember pounding on their heads with my copper axe, Reveredglaze. It's killed 14 dwarves and five goblins.

That time the child ran up to me, murder in its eyes, I had to chop its head off. Poor thing. Maybe I'll engrave a slab and see who it was, I can't remember.

But those times are past, and we've rebuilt and moved on. And they've elected me every year since the vampire died, and we've done well for ourselves. We may attract a king someday, I'd like to meet King Kivish and his consort, the Fisherdwarf Sarvesh Cogzugob, but I don't think I want to give up my authority here just yet. There's still a lot of work to do.

24 Echo!

Hear that echoing clang? Solid stoneware. We stared this project before, well, back when the founders were still here. It was the vision, a great mountain of stoneware to advertise our fire clay, and represent the mountain, symbol of the Squashed Gem, our local Dwarven government. It took some years to put together, but it's done now. There was a bit of a delay after the first couple rings were constructed.

23 To here

Here's the reservoir. Impressive, huh? That's the access room. The drainage lever has only been flipped once, to remove some old corpses.

22 From here

Here's the bottom of the stack. We joke that all of our water is laced in forgotten beast blood, so many have died here.

20 Big drop

You may not have noticed, but this was an early security measure. The two big bridges retract, leading to a big drop into a magma pit (currently drained, it hasn't seen use in years.) Records indicate that one dorf fell in officially, but we suspect that there were others. There have been a lot of ghosts flying around lately...
