Fortress: FancyhammersBAK Tharis

Fallen fools

So many visiting dorfs and gobs have tried to ford the river above the waterfall.

Their junk keeps piling up down here.

I even tried building a ramp that could theoretically be used to climb back to terra firma, but they never use it.

Tower Side View

I didn't expect it to look this squat, but it's still impressive.

I'm looking forward to a stable version of DFHack to come out so I can admire it in 3D.

Gold dome

Highest point in the map. The tower at the base of the dome provides a fine base for shooting at keas.

Statue Garden

With all of the taverns, I don't think anyone has bothered to visit.

Avuz Bridgedmist

Fell off a bridge.

Sand and Fire Clay

Sand on the left, fire clay on the right. It's a nice perk.

Beginning of the Bottom

This could get fun...

Farm Factory and Cave Entrance

This is where forgotten beasts and troglodytes go to die. Four war dogs, two statues of forgotten beasts, a few cage traps, and a stairway leading into the barracks. I like using the canyon for a natural barrier.

Statue Factory, Pilgrim Path

The grates are so every passing dorf gets some waterfall contact. The tunnel then continues through a washing pool, through tavern #3 (The Dear Nuts, formerly owned by the founding manager post-retirement, now owned by the founding fisherdwarf. The tavern was originally supposed to be a library, but then I found that I had no bookshelves because this game began in v.40, and thusly no musical instruments.

The statue represents the scuttling of the wagon, bring in a sunroom directly beneath that spot. The washing-pond has proven oddly attractive to human visitors. You can see one of them there now.

I decided to arrange the temples in 2-z rectangular rooms off of a spiral tunnel that just reaches the upper edge of the first cavern. I managed to get statues for every god the dorfs worship, missing Thola Redfells of agriculture (our whipmaster's deity of choice) Guz of lust, and Bobet the Muddled Trifle of misery.

The Crypt

This is the first time I've done this kind of crypt before, I'm a little proud of it.

Whenever a lot of dorfs die at once, I figure it deserves its own memorial. As you may infer, this has been a quiet fort, with one minor catastrophe. In the year 10, the Forgotten Beast Molu Lurkdripped the Silence of Insanities emerged from cavern 1. If memory serves, it was a web-spitting, two tailed dimetrodon. My first warning appeared when it webbed and decapitated both the baroness and Thob, who was a founding miner. He's buried in the top left tomb. The military was sent out, and was promptly torn apart as the beast slew the militia commander and six others, mostly by webbing and decapitation. Finally, the marksdorf Edzul Shieldbrushes finished off the beast by, and I think this is actually how it went down, biting it in the head.

The beast is memorialized with a slab at the front, the statues record the slaying of Messthos Hallflares and
Edzul Fencecanyon. Messthos was the commander, which is why his tomb is a bit more blinged out. Military tombs each get a rack and a stand respectively.

The other slabs...first two across the hall are for a couple who dodged a giant bat and fell into the garbage chute.

The three graves to the north are for victims of wild creatures. One of them has never been recovered as he dodged off a bridge into the river. His body lay there still.

The two on the bottom...one was the victim of one of Ast's tantrums. His blood still stains the wall of the mayoral tavern, if you look. The other, I think he died during an accident involving a scaffolding removal, though the slab says he was killed by a giant olm.

Small crypt to the north, two civilians incinerated by a fire breathing giant vulture. Small crypt to the south, two marksdwarves who thought it'd be smart to gather bolts outside in a siege. The final one is our founding manager (that's his statue) who died after injuries sustained by a crundle attack.

The remaining slabs are outsiders, a human whipmaster got caught in a siege, and a dwarf merchant who tried to exit via caverns, slain by a troll.

Pet Cemetary

Because pets deserve their own coffins, but don't deserve to be buried with the same dignity as dwarves. I think all but the top two are occupied.

Grand Dining Hall, Crypt

Even with three taverns, I like to have a dining hall that could, theoretically, seat the entire fortress. There it is, with accompanying food and booze factories.

To the NE is the crypt, which deserves a POI of its own.

Hospital and More Bedrooms

So, I needed to expand, and realized that my design ahd kin of walled myself in. I think I built the two hospital wings first, on the west, with the chief medical dwarf's office on the way in. I then figured where I could dig another ramp down, and from there I went with the good ole windmill fractal layout. This way, every dwarf gets a room of equal size (five urists, including entryway) with one engraved floor for decor. Even the bedrooms that break the pattern have the same volume. The non-engraved rooms remain unoccupied, and as we've hit capacity, may be forever so.

To the north, if you look carefully, there's slab and coffin storage with a lone workshop for engraving slabs. You can guess what follows from that.

Da Mayor's Space

We've only had one mayor so far, Besmar Bridgeenjoyed. She's also the owner of the great round tavern The Green Peaches. Her dining hall is on the right, and her office is a z level up, where she is right now, conducting a meeting. Her bedroom is about 4 z's down in the apartment complex to the SE. The well is the public well, and made of gold. The big thing to the west is for general furniture storage, mostly barrels, bags, and bins.

It wasn't intentional, but the layout kind of reminds me of a cartoon character. The levers by the well control water intake and outtake, which is rather sloppy but functional.
