Out-of-doors Fields

The biggest plot here is reserved for sun berries, which I have so far not yet found, but which I think I can get in this region.

I had to build some temporary floors attached to the top of the containing wall and designate ponds to muddy up some of the rhyolite tiles in the space I wanted to use. The rocks used to compose these still litter the fields, since I have outdoor refuse collection turned off.

Live Target Practice

I haven't done much playing with this yet, and I'll probably expand the room before too long, but live target practice is good times. Take a look at the refuse pile upstairs to see a couple of the "results."

It occurs to me that if I properly remove the goblins' equipment first, the fortifications are entirely unnecessary. Durr.

Dwarven Welcoming Committee

It still needs traps studded along its distance, and a competent cadre of marksdwarves to give it oomph, but the Dwarven Siege Welcoming Committee System is fully constructed. I'm curious to see how the ballistas work out, never having used them before, but my first siege of goblins all got snagged by the cage traps at the entrance.

Maybe next time.

Also: note to self: make sure the damn civilians don't come flooding into the death trap next time, like they did this time. Since all the goblins got cagetrapped, it was no big deal, but that would be a murder-fest if they do it during a heavier invasion.

Cage Traps

Who needs well trained soldiers and complicated defensive catacombs when you can just shove a bunch of cage traps in your entryway?

Not me, apparently.

Glass Bottom Bridge

While visiting beautiful Moistnesscloistered, be sure to take in the breathtaking view of the bottomless chasm, complete with named Batmen, from the glass bottomed bridge.

Question: why the hell did my dwarves give a name to all the Batmen in the bottomless chasm?

No Sun Berries?

I still haven't got any sun berries to plant. Granted, I stopped running out my herbalist during non-spring months a while ago, but you would think the hippies would bring some seeds.

Purring Maggots

I got a purring maggot! I was very excited. I put it in its own cage so it wouldn't be near the central production area, disgusting every dwarf that walked by, and I went out to milk it. One milk. I made cheese from that milk. One cheese. Each maggot can be milked once per season. I guess the cheese is worth 100 dwarfbucks, but damn, that was a waste of time. This is of course not surprising to anybody. That being said, maybe I'll keep trying to catch purring maggots for roleplaying purposes.

Side note: to catch a purring maggot, build an animal trap DIRECTLY ON one of the "bottomless" squares at the lowest level of the map, and bait it with meat. If you go down to level 0, you can see another trap put in the proper location.

Siege Training

Small, self-contained siege operation training units. Channels make ammo recycling easy.

"Legit" Bedrooms

I started carving out my favorite fractal bedroom pattern, thinking I'd put in beds down here for the new arrivals. Blech. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

When the economy hits, I will be *screwed*.

Still-Boring Dining Hall

It makes the dwarves happy with its legendariness, but the Hall of Food Consumption and General Time Wasting still lacks a certain panache. Maybe when I discover the underground river I'll feel more motivated to set up my little "islands" scheme.

Noble Stacking

I'm not sure if I've edged the Group Noble Housing up to Royal status yet, but it's close. Next step is to build in little alcoves for the beds, which I can close off with floodgates or internal-marked doors, and turn into mini murder chambers in case of unreasonable mandate.

Too Much Trash

I'm not sure if it was my goblin slaughtering or what, but I had a refuse-explosion, leaving my designated areas full and useless. Miasma ensued. I'm digging out this area for the safe-and-useful refuse-bits, aka bones, skulls, and shells.

Well, safe-and-useful bones and shells, and safe-and-useless-except-for-moods skulls.

Jailbreak

Carrying a goblin to the pit dump point is no easy task (see Live Target Practice POI). The damn civilians seems entirely incapable of doing it. The goblin runs up the stairs, my soldiers slaughter it, and my beautiful marble is covered with blood.

On the bright side, dwarves revel in goblin blood, neh?

Dining Islands

I have yet to flood the layer below. Also, I am having a slight livestock problem.

Pet Roulette

The room is filled with spike traps. I haven't tested it out yet. Pets can be "inserted" into the room either via cage or pit (see z-layer above).
