Bronze

I haven't really embarked on a map with lots of granite before, so the whole "I can actually make bronze" thing is new to me. Indeed, I started exploring this higher up level looking for more malachite to use up all the cassiterite I already had.

Bone Overflow

When I made this bone/shell/skull stockpile next to the craftshop and bowyer, I didn't set the flags right, and ended up with several giant miasma clouds as a reward. After setting the flags properly, the stockpile promptly filled to overcapacity. I must have hunted more than I thought in this first year.

Bedrooms

above and below are the bedrooms. Mostly half finished. But at least with beds and a door.

Bedroom Complex

Via the wiki, http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Bedroom_design#Living_Pods_.28Residential_Flats.29 . As advertised, these lay out quickly. Some of the walls are mined out due to a strange mood need for uncut gems.

Bauxite Dining

I think I may surround the dining room with a ring of fire later. Bauxite and magma -- every dwarf's dream.

Bathed in Blood

Blood everywhere -- goblin, human, dwarven -- but there is more to be shed soon, very soon. Notice, among other things, the two goblin bowman unleashing hell from just inside the exit ramp.

Barrel Conservation

On most of my fortresses, I am practically swimming in barrels and bins. Though the saguaros do provide some lumber, it is not enough to support my usual container habits, and I have been trying to separate out stockpiles that can be set to zero barrels, where appropriate. Every time I get the message that booze production is being held up due to a lack of barrels, it brings a tear to my eye ... and it worries me.

I have begun production of metal bins and barrels, but the cost still seems prohibitive. Granted, a big part of the reason that I chose this map was that I wanted to see what a low-lumber situation was like (and with the saguaros, this is much less harsh in that manner than it "could be"), but I'm finding that it's not particularly to my liking. There's something about the orderly rows of barrels that is infinitely more pleasing than the clutter of sprawling stockpiles -- and there's also the realization that however slow, lumber is a renewable resource, and short of goblin-gear meltdown, metal is not.

Axe-shy Axedwarves

While my swordsdwarves contingent, led by a proficient swordsdwarf immigrant, managed to train themselves into general excellence, my axedwarves have thus far failed to do so (this over the course of a couple of years). They are fond of practicing dodging, but apparently they aren't dodging axes.

Atom Smasher

With the amount of hematite being mined out, I thought that perhaps smashing the excess rock might help cut FPS issues.

Arrival

This seems like as good a spot to stop as any -- the mixture of limestone and andesite pebbles suggests granite and magma lurking beneath the surface.

We were warned that there would be no wood for us when we arrived, but we had no idea.

Arrival

Here we struck the soil - a grand vista.

Now, to get down off the heights and comfortably underground.

Aquifer

Who would have thought that this sand-blasted land would contain so much water just below the surface? I have already been thwarted in my early fortress design by several aquiferous layers, most notably in the Glassworks.

On the bright side, this means that the dwarves will always have a freshwater supply; hopefully, though, we never have to resort to drinking anything so lacking in alcohol as water.

Animal Handling

Animal handling (kennels, nest boxes) are on the outer northern ring. Sadly, both the male dog and male peacock brought on embark are decidedly uninterested in mating, which has put a damper on this industry.

An Early Well

I built a well here, thinking it would be a reasonably safe drop down to the water in the cavern below. However, the well never activated (for reasons beyond my comprehension), and at some point, something bloodied up the area -- so I decided to just take it out, and seal up the hole.

A flying crystal glass forgotten beast appeared in the caverns about a quarter of a season before this snapshot, which hastened the necessity of sealing up this entrance.
