Smashing stuff (and sometimes dwarves) under bridges is the de facto method of getting rid of useless junk, which is precisely what this thing does. Big whoop, right? However, you'll notice the two levers on the left, the bottom of which cannot be flipped right off the bat. Y'see, when you flip the top lever, the door to the compactor closes before a bridge connecting to the bottom lever (which controls the smasher) appears. It's set up in such a way that it semi-automatically ensures that people can't wander into the main smasher when it's in operation.
It's kind of superfluous when you realize that I could've just selected the door and locked it before running the thing, but what kind of dwarf fort would this be if I didn't implement some overly complex bit of machinery? -
