Since dwarves can walk diagonally, keep in mind that those four stone elements were all equidistant to the dwarf.

In Manhattan distance he picked up the farthest one, true.

If Dwarf Fortress processes objects the same way it does jobs, say for building walls (last issued = first done) then it was bound to take that one ONLY if there was no closer one.

Mega Beast Dwarves
