Awesome fort. Really like the organic layout of it.

One question though. What purpose do the extra trade depots on lvl8 serve? If they are trade depots at all.. Those columns look a little different than those of the depot on the top level, then again i dont remember any other building that looks like that.

Right... :)

This was my first fort after a long time of not playing DF, so i had to re-learn quite a lot of things. This fortress also served as proving grounds for a few things i never really tried before (like the underground windmills, the defensive structures or even the magma pumps).

I've moved on to a new project in the meantime, so this fort is history now :)

As for the animals, i followed an advice from the wiki i think, which suggested that locking them into such 1x1 cells can reduce pathing issues.

See the section about pens. Not sure how it would be possible to see what it actually does :) You would need an extreme amount of animals tied this way for it to work.

Entrance hall

This is going to be heavily fortified, with the intention that no invader will make it to the far end alive.

Once the side rooms are dug out the trade depot will be removed and replaced with one depot in each room. This dual depot system will allow me to counter 'lazy hauler' syndrome where the dwarves refuse to haul items away from a depot once the traders have left. I.e. if the dwarves refuse to clear a depot then I can close off outside access to it and open up the other one instead, allowing my lazy dwarves to haul in safety while still having a wagon-accessible depot ready for the next caravan to arrive. - Phlamethrower
