One of my ideas is to use this formation as a natural ramp. Once dwarves climb to the top of this little spire, they'd have to go across a bridge extending either North or, more likely, West in to the cliff face to enter the fortress. Obviously, some smoothing of this formation would need to occur... we'd want to make sure that wagons can make it up, after all.
This presents some large advantages for our entrance, namely that it is off the ground which makes it easily defended and prevents flooding. -
