I will end up having to dig down into the caverns anyway to provide drainage for my watermills (no wind).
The main fortress will definitely be in the cliffs, and circular towers, a main southern one and a small northern one for storage.

Amazing.
If i had a magma pipe around a river, in a valley, major or not, I would also attempt this, but I lack confidence in my skills as a planner and would likely drown them all. I didn't know green glass was magma-proof, which is extremely useful. I'm done importing bauxite now. I also like the underwater pressurized access with the walkway going through it.

Looks like some poor miner drowned down on the bottom floor.

Random Point of Interest:

Start of Excavation

Key design for this map has been the towers, with occasional connecting tunnels. Now begins the excavation: to "free" the towers from the surrounding rock and make them true towers.
I'm starting here, between the north and west tower, experimenting on how to best do "controlled demolition": take down large amounts of rock quickly and safely. Not really sure of the best method yet... and I've had a few "accidents" on the job.
