These are the breeding pits. Only one is occupied at present as the remaining livestock are all caged in the zoos upstairs.
The magma surrounding the pens was intended to allow for emergency annihilation of stock in the event of a population explosion. It would probably work, but I'd forgotten just how slowly magma moves. I should have made them a drowning chamber instead, although that would then require the floors to be block-paved to prevent tree growth. -
