It's grown a bit since I posted this, I think I'm approaching 200. Don't really know what to do with them all.

I really like your workshop area, nice and compact while still looking very clean. How many dwarfs do you have right now?

yup, this fortress tantrum spiraled and died. I might reclaim it in the future, but I usually hate cleaning up the massive amounts of trash scattered all over the place so probably not.

I started a new fortress, which has equally interesting if not better terrain. Just uploaded the first map now.

That's some serious security.

Items of note for this fortress:

* Population cap set at 30; pop peaked at 48 and has been stable at 39 for about 5 years.
* Embarked with 2 picks, an axe, an anvil and some animals. Used above-ground crops only until I could purchase my first seeds.
* I have a duchess, but no mayor!
* Initially defended entirely by cage traps; now my 4 macemen and 2 archers can handle the latest ambushes (no sieges because of low population).
* Working and living mostly out of the southern part of map, at or above the main ground level of the embark site. Casting obsidian 30 z-levels below ground to build the "permanent" fortress.

Volcanoes are always fun. And ditto on the fortress design, I always want to incorporate multi-zlevel rooms but I never manage to plan for it.

This is pretty amazing. It feels like it could very well be what kobolds would realistically build.

Mmm, the quarry space is just quarry space. I do like compact fortresses, but I usually let the lay of the land guide my designs. I still have yet to give my dwarfs proper living quarters. I imagine that will come sometime this year. Luckily, my incomplete dining hall keeps them fairly happy.

Yeah the positioning is mind-boggling. The central pit is in my opinion dwarfish. It suddenly reminds me of "This Is Sparta!" Are you planning to use that quarry space to living space later, or do you prefer more compact fortresses?

This fortress is pretty fucking cool. I love the way you designed (or rather, didn't) most of the floors - it seems very haphazard. The founders hall is pretty badass, and an idea I plan to steal. I look forward to future maps!

Yes. Somehow I tend to always build on hillsides, and end up with a similar layout of projecting off the bottom of the hill and gradually terracing and walling off the uphill sections. It works and can look elegant, but I should work on a more interesting design.
