Thanks for that, Retro, and by extension, Acrecia!

I think this could turn out great, if we have time for everything we have planned!

@ Rotten: The maps from earlier in the fortress' history is uploaded here, but I'll answer anyway.

There are no plans to expand the fortress any more in the lake, only above and possibly below, but there is an emergency lake drain. The southern dam has four floodgates that should drain the lake pretty quickly, since it's basically a huge pressurised cistern.

The temporary lodgings can be seen in the z-level underneath the lowest housing level (it's basically just a muddy cavern). They serve as transit to the southern mines nowadays, but they were inhabited for quite long, the last dwarves moved out as late as around year 60. The above-ground remnants have long since been dug away to make room for the lake.

Carp were not [f]that[/f] bad, I had a wall around the temporary settlement, and when the river drained, they all air-drowned.

@ Retro
Thank you! Honestly, for me dwarf fortress is all about building stylish fotresses, and it's really good to hear that someone else than myself thinks what I build is looking good. It's even better to get compliments from one building fortresses as beautiful as yours.

@ EricBlank
Actually, all constructions are magma proof, you could build a magma channel from ice and it would hold. other buildings (chairs, doors and so forth) melt if magma occupies the same tile as them, so a door made of wood is magma safe as long as it's closed, once opened, it will burn up. The same goes for mechanisms in buildings (hence the importance of Bauxite).

Also, that is not a miner, that's one of the fortress guard that dodged into the well while sparring in the sleeping barracks -.- (can't wait to be able to designate separate military and civilian barrackses (?) in the next version)

Beautiful map!

I really like the way it's made to look good for dwarves, doing something like that takes some skill at visualising just what you're building and seeing the potential in unshaped landscapes. This is usually the way I try to build my own fortesses, and as such I think this is exceedingly beautiful, way better than any fort I've ever made.

I especially like the way the entrance snakes its way from the surface into the cavern via the trade depot on top of the huge pillar thingie.

Holy huge embark Batman!

What FPS do you get? I'm seriously impressed by you CPU if you get good FPS on this map.

Really cool map, though, I really like the winding tunnel from the cliff face to the glacierside castle.

It's Dorten's smooth walls tileset, from the wiki.

These sort of environments usually crop up around where smaller streams meet any major rivers, the hard part is finding such a place with a magma pipe, as it's very hard to dam such a large river without magma.

Glass production would be virtually impossible without magma as well. At least at this scale.

As for the seed, I do have it. Try here.

Edit: messed up the url

This fortress is now officially scrapped, due to the enourmous amount of time it would take to make such a huge obsidian mould.

Instead, I have stared another (yet again) to make my dreams of an underwater fortress come true. This map will be uploaded sometime when it has gotten started properly.

I did check that they worked, but I've run into another, more serious problem.

Apparantly, bridges resist magma on top of them just fine, as long as they have no mechanisms or magma-safe mechanisms in them. This means that the central bridges deconstruct when the channel is filled. This in turn leads to bad things, as I get a few obsidian pillars, and then a wall just below the surface.

I've deviced another way of building the wall, however, but It'll take quite a while, since I'm gonna need to collapse the current channel, and then build another one.

The plan is to build a single tile channel, one z-level up in the air.

Edit: Hmmm... maybe this channel is salvagebable, after all, I just need 60 bauxite mechanisms...

Edit 2: On second thought, maybe not, since it would be hard getting an even wall with this channel... I'll still need the 60 bauxite mechanisms, though...

The bridges will be deconstructed when retracted, but that won't really matter, since they're only meant to be used once, anyway.

Thank you for that, Markavian, I'll use the BB code next time.

As for your suggestion, Phlamethrower, I think it's a good one and I've thought a bit about it and I think it should be doable with only constructed floors. AFAIK even constructed floors punch out other floors when collapsed, and if they do, it should be possible to only leave supporting floors outside of the "drydock" wall, by undermining it from the inside, and the collapsing a constructed ring of floors.

We'll see how it works out when I get that far, or maybe earlier, I should test it somewhere first...

This fortress is indeed very beautiful and I really think it deserves to be expanded. Make the towers higher, for example. A fortess is never complete! ;)

Oh, and to the people that asked what tileset this is, I believe that it's Dorten's smooth walls tileset, seen here: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/File:720x225_SmoothWalls.PNG

The plan is to use flat ground for the wall, as that was one of the mistakes I did at my old site. There, the obsidian wall didn't actually collapse as planned, because it was supported by the edges of the seabed a z-level up from where I was planning on building the fortress.

Your method of making an obsidian block on the seafloor is an interesting one, and I did look at your fortress during the planning stages, to see what techniques where available to underwater fortresses, and it seemed obsidian casting and massive amounts of screw pumps where the only ones that where useable.

So I combined the ideas. The idea is to encapsule a volume of water with obsidian walls and then pump it out, to get exposed seabed. Then build the fortress in the resulting "drydock", if you will. it will be mostly made of glass, naturally ;)

The bigest problem I have is how to get rid of the obsidian wall when everything's done in the drydock, it's possible to remove the uppermost wall by channeling, but that will leave an unsightly wall underwater. I will see what I can come up with...

Yes, wood is going to be a problem, so I'll have to do without it for a couple of years before I've imported large enough quantities.

Hopefully I should be able to get the obsidian walls up and begin pumping in five years or so (I'm only going to have seven dwarves until I get the underwater fortress up and running)
