Frostdrummed - 252 Mid Winter by [deleted]

Map Description:

So as another year (well, almost) goes by, things liven up a bit. Progressive.

A few things: We got tons of migrants (30 of them over the course of this year, totaling 37), I think there's a goblin snatcher camping out on the top of the map, one ambush. And man, did it feel like this year flew by! Before I knew it all 3 caravans had finished their visits, though I disastrously killed one of the Dwarven merchants with an accidental early pull of a lever, causing them all to up and leave. Which is okay, I don't think I ordered anything TOO important from them, and I got some goods from the donkey I knocked out along with him. A raccoon stole a {(narrow giant cave spider silk left sock)}. Oh god.

I also had two moods by my armorsmith and weaponsmith (!) but they were possessed instead of going fey or secretive. You bet I was fucking pissed. The armor is gold chain leggings (no, I really didn't have anything better around at the time). It was worth somewhere around 150000 dwarfbucks, being made out of gold, and quadrupled my fortress worth. We're up to around 200k now. The weapon was actually a trap component, made of copper, which amusingly has the gold artifact leggings engraved on it.

Tough luck. Guess I'll train them the long way.

Point of Interest: Statue Garden

Trying to fight cave adaptation as early as I can. Unfortunately, half of my dwarves just want to party all day. Whatever. There are high walls around to ridges just to be sure goblins don't try to shoot into it. I think the dwarves don't linger out here for too long at a time, so I don't think they should freeze as long as I keep them busy. - [deleted]

I've used that same fractal bedroom pattern. I like how you smoothed your magma sewer there for no reason but to look pretty.

It's pretty close to containing every animal in this fortress that isn't owned by somebody. I'm sick of seeing them run around outside, where they're liable to get killed by an ambush. - [deleted]
Δ 15. Double Bridge Fix
After realizing the potential dangers of this system and crushing my dwarves (or should I say the potential hilarity), I figure I should start making this safer while dwarves are moving around through it if I need to pull the lever for any reason. The first step is to remove the redundant double bridges, replace the back bridge with floodgates to first get dwarves to stop running through the area, and a raised drawbridge just in front of that to prevent sieging trolls, giants, etc. from destroying them after they've been put up. - [deleted]
¶ 15. Entryway
Expanded the traps, such joy. The initial bunch of traps near where the goblins are dead are stonefall traps. The ones going up to the two bridges are cage traps--meant to catch, stop, and break any ambushes that somehow manage past the stonefall traps if I can't pull the lever for some reason. The thin hallway on the left is filled with stonefall traps, except for an artifact weapon trap at the entrance to it. It's a giant copper axe blade artifact.
I'm thinking about switching the places of the stonefall and cage traps so I can have some prisoners to play with. - [deleted]

Δ 14. Temporary Production
Just situated in the hallway. The big stockpile is for blocks, I was training some masons out of the peasantry. I also had to build some forges and smelters in here, too (they're gone now) so that my possessed dwarves could forge their crap. The magma shops weren't ready at the time. - [deleted]
Δ 13. Bedrooms
Nearly completely furnished at this point. Working on smoothing out all of the walls, before I finally dump all of the stone out of here. I can expand it later if need be. You'll also notice most of the Dwarves are here, as well. My masons, in particular--working hard, unlike the slacking miners who seem to be stuck at that statue garden.
The civilian masons are named Pioneers, the masons who I plan to turn into champions eventually are named Army Corps. It's just some early training to get their stats up. - [deleted]
Δ 13. Plans for 253
Definitely want to start setting up above-ground farms (with glass floors over them to allow light in while keeping bad weather out) and underground farms pretty soon. The cloth trade, in my experience, has to get going by year 4, before the clothes of the original 7 start going to tatters. I do have leather to make clothes until then (which if you ask me sounds more suited for this cold environment), so I should be fine.
Second of all, my next wave of migrants I hope to get at least 3 peasants into the Army Corps, so I can have an initial training group of 6. They'll learn to wrestle like champions, before stepping up to hammers and finally crossbows. This will make them a deadly ranged menace, but when they run out of ammo, they hopefully won't be useless with their crossbows and actually be decent at bludgeoning with them.
Furthermore, I want to start getting the (mostly) permanent workshops dug out in 253 so I can stop cluttering hallways with crap. - [deleted]
Δ 10. Magma Shops (Forge Level)
Looking good. I have iron production going on as much as I can, but it looks like they may slow down due to clutter soon as I'm short of bins at the moment and I don't want to risk my woodcutters after that recent ambush. We'll wait until spring to go cutting wood for stuff. In fact, I may not have to go outside for wood by next year if I can get some tower cap farms growing. - [deleted]
Δ 9. Magma Shops (Magma Level)
Pretty, isn't it? Bauxite floodgates with bauxite mechanisms in them can stop the flow at any time. Interestingly, when I made a mason shop in the middle of a bauxite pocket, they somehow found a way to make 3 floodgates out of other stone. They got it done eventually. - [deleted]
