Craftedgold - 212 Mid Winter by TroZ

Map Description:

This is a fortress I was playing about a year and a half ago, on 40d9. It survived a dragon attack, and numerous goblin attacks. The King and Queen have moved in and the population cap has been reached (199 dwarfs currently). There is a 10 story waterfall into a grand hall (still partially under construction - only a few tables and chairs).

Recently, I've been using this fortress to test a Dwarf Fortress to Minecraft map conversion program that I've been working on. Here is the Minecraft Indev version of this map: http://troz.shackspace.com/minecraft/df2mc/new/Craftedgold.mclevel

The main entrance to the fortress - TroZ
Δ 16. Main Staircase
This is the main staircase and secondary entrance to the fortress. There are six staircases that extend down from here for 10 levels, and 2 that go up to the surface. Above the central staircase of each group of 3 stairs, is a floor grate, letting light in in an attempt to ward off cave adaption. - TroZ
Δ 16. Original well and control room
This was the original fortress well and control room.
The levels here control the flow of water into the main reservoir.

The well in this room is fed from the tunnel to the north, draining through the grates to the holding room below this one. If you are careful and only have one of the floodgate at the north or south end of the funnel open at a time, this is perfectly save. One tunnel's worth of water can only fill the well holding tank 5/7 full at most, but really only 3/7 in practice as not all the water drains in a reasonable amount of time (and the tunnel never fills in a reasonable amount of time either, note it's current state). When the well nears the 'dry' state, one tunnel's worth of water will fill it to near full. - TroZ
Δ 16. Water Death Trap
If any goblins make it past the Marksdwarfs on the walls, and past the trapped entrance gate / drawbridge and the traps at the beginning of the entrance hallway, I can lock the secondary doors in the main entrance but leave the two doors (entrance and exit) to this room open.
This will leave a path into the fortress available, but any invaders will need to go through this room. The will have to go down the eastern wall for 7 levels to the floor, zig-zaging as the stairs alternate between the north and south side of the room. They will then have to walk up 6 levels of the eastern side of the central wall in this room, zig-zagging between the north and south again. Then then must repeat the procedure to go down the western side of the central wall 6 levels and finally back up the west wall 7 levels, zig-zagging all the way.
The problem for them is that they will never make it. Directly one floor under this square is a pressure plate what opens up four flood gates, which will quickly flood this room 6 levels deep with water, likely drowning any enemies bold and stupid enough to make it this far. any survivors will be easy pickings for my military.

The flood gates can also be triggered in a control room that also controls resetting and unflooding the trap. - TroZ
Δ 14. Control Room
From this room the Flooding Death Tap can be controlled (triggered, un-flooded, and water supply cutoff for maintenance). The lone control on the other side of the room stops water going to the 10 level waterfall into the great hall. - TroZ
Δ 14. Drainage basin
Originally the Water Death Trap was designed to empty into this area, which was large enough to eventually evaporate. Later, when the waterfall was installed, the constant inflow of water caused this basin to overflow, even after being enlarged. The waterfall was shutdown for a while, while a tunnel was dug and pumps were installed to return the water back the the main reservoir.
There was a few issues at first (hence the water on the ground above), but widening the outflow tunnel seemed to solve them. - TroZ
Δ 7. Base of waterfall drain pump stack
A rigorous design was not used for the pump stack, as so a portion of the water that is pumped up can leak into the mechanisms powering the stack and flow back down to the bottom. However, it is adequate enough the amount of water flowing into the waterfall currently that there has yet to be an issues in over a year of operation. - TroZ
Δ 7. Great Hall
The is the new a Great Hall added after the completion of the King and Queen's Quarters. It still needs more tables and chairs (only the highest quality ones will do), but is otherwise complete.
Along the north wall is a 10 level waterfall. Some additional engineering is required at the to of it to improve water flow. Not only is it for decoration and ambiance, but it provides water to the well in the south-central part of the great hall. - TroZ
