Here is my new fortress. I abandonned the last one to ambushes, so i decided to build the ultimate defense against them.
It took me 8 years to build the fortress with 3 years for the defense sytem alone.
The "spider defense system" is simple : a moat around the whole map, with only 10 tiles or so between the moat and the map edge. There are only eight holes in it : eight tunnels leading to the same spot - the entrance of the fortress.
Each tunnel is trapped with cages to detect ambushes. When an ambush is detected, the entrance of the tunnel is shut and magma is pumped into it. When everybody's dead, magma is evacuated, remaining items picked up, cages replaced and then the tunnel is opened again, ready for slaughter.
Why 8 tunnels? Because this is the only way to defend migrants against ambushes. It is possible to define the caravan entry spot (that's what i did) but, as far as i know, migrants do what they want. The problem is that, in maps with a lot of ambushes, there is always the risk that migrants encounter them. Now, with 8 tunnels, the migrants always have a near entrance. When they're in the tunnel, i close its entrance so that they can travel safe.
There are easier ways to protect against ambushes, but i found this idea too funny. Plus, it suits well to the rest of the fortress : it's huge.
Note that i had to limit population to 50. Given the time necessary to build everything, it would have been impossible without.
Now that everything is in place, i can start playing :p.
