I dug out the rooms that will be used as the Captain of the Guard's room, office/dining room, and the prison, and in addition I started deep mining operations. Not too much as far as metal is concerned (mainly useless veins) except for... well, you'll see at the PoIs.
I hope I hit magma or coal soon. I don't want to have to be burning wood for smelters and the forge to work.

You can download the compressed map file:

but you will need the .NET version of
SL's DF Map Compressor
to convert to the .PNG image format.

If your map is slow starting out, it will only get slower as you play - slower and slower, until you quit in disgust.
I've learnt this the *hard* way. Consider a much more modest map and init.txt settings.

I know of how large maps are hugely affected the more you play, FPS wise. I too learned so the hard way, but fortunately, it was while I was still new to the game.
However, I seem to have fixed this, mostly, by switching to full screen; with full screen, I got 90+ FPS, which later dropped to a modest 40+-50+ when I dug deeper (which may or may not have to do with me digging or not, though I do think it's probably due to all the stone).
I'll probably disable some things though, weather for sure, and temperature, at least until I hit magma.
