Canyonhome - 202 Late Winter by Yonder

Map Description:

This Map is of my fortress near the end of the second winter. The majority of my efforts has been towards building the defensive tower+causeway complex. It is close to completion now, but I still need to get some more finished. I especially need to cap it off so that I don't get eagles or who knows what swooping down on my dwarves.

As far as the underground portion of my fortress goes it is pretty basic, I will have to tidy things up and get some things running (like looms and whatnot) that I have completely ignored so far, I also need to open up some exploratory mining. Not only have I nearly ran out of Orthoclase (because I am building my tower entirely out of that, but I haven't run into a single ore yet, which has me a little worried.

Δ 17. Tower
The pride and joy of my fortress. This tower is partially surrounded by a causeway. Any people entering my fortress need to go up two levels of ramps, then walk around this tower while under fire. There are several bridges so that I can trap attackers and prevent them from escaping. The last bridge is built in two parts, I am going to station guard dogs at the inner end of the smaller bridge to keep thieves out, then only lower the 4-wide bridge when Trading Caravans come. The tower is going to have one more level, and then a roof over that to protect my dwarves from harpies, eagles, dragons, rain, etc.

After food and quarters for everything was developed about half of the (13-14 people) were devoted to the tower. 3-4 masons were continuously churning out blocks, and another 6-8 masons were laying them down as they were made (in the beginning they had other things to do as well, towards the end my block builders were skilled enough to make them almost as fast as these guys could lay them. Merely building walls out of blocks doesn't increase the mason skill, so the workshops locked out dabblers to leave the skilled people making the blocks. There was nothing stopping the Skilled guys from laying them, but that was generally not a problem. Behind them with the even less glamourous jobs were 2-3 haulers which did nothing but keep the workshops stocked with the right stone, and move the blocks up closer to the surface.

The basement level of my tower will be barracks (beds only), and dining room for the guards. Ground floor (no fortifications to keep them safe) will be sparring space and archery ranges for off duty militia. The three floors above that will just be places for on duty marksdwarves, Although I will probably rarely have more than the level with the bridges staffed. - Yonder
Δ 13. Entrance Courtyard
Eventually people will enter this courtyard and think "Wow, what spacious and luxurious surroundings!" For now, however it is still crammed with the temporary workshops and storage I set up when we first broke ground. - Yonder
Δ 12. Dining Room/Quarry
Right now my Dwarves can't eat a meal in piece because I set up a bunch of Masons in what used to be a large vein of orthoclase. Now there isn't any orthoclase left here anymore, but those stockpiles around each mason only accept orthoclase, a few haulers constantly keep them filled. For awhile my fortress actually completely ran out of Orthoclase and these guys made dozens of Diorite blocks before I noticed, I'm not sure what I am going to do with them. I am almost out of orthoclase again, so I am going to have to do some more digging. - Yonder
