Rootportals - 273 Early Spring by Priz

Map Description:

273 rolls around. Chandelier ate up my 60ish gold blocks I'd managed to trade for, and construction is on hold until the humans show up. This year was another "block production" year, and I'm now at about 9000 stone/wood blocks.

For some reason, all previous POIs are a great deal to the left in this year's map. I can't seem to fix it, sorry.

Mhm. What kind of embark location did you look for?

I'm playing 40d, and don't use any of the handy tools for it beyond the wiki, so I mostly guess at where a good spot is, and the more biomes the better. I always try to have a few features - this embark was supposed to have an underground river, some magma, etc. etc., but I apparently didn't pay enough attention and ended up with a chasm and no metal deposits :s. At least I have lots of multi-colored stone. If I could do it again, I'd probably go for limestone at the risk of losing such a nice valley to work with and having no interesting features.

Points of Interest

19. In-progress chandelier

After something like 8 years of trading for it, I finally have enough gold to start on the chandelier. I have no particular design laid out for it (much like almost all the fort), but my adept (smiths/woodworkers) needed something to break up the monotony of making wood blocks and installing floors, so I figured what the heck.

The current design will menace with spikes of firey gold, though I'm thinking I might have to do something much, much less elaborate than what I want due to space and height concerns. I can always make one out of platnum later, anyway....

Lack of magma (thus far - it should be here someplace) means I will have to use gem windows for my "fire". I think it will probably look better with the flashing yellow-orange-red gems anyway.

By 274 I've used about 70 blocks of gold, which was all I'd picked up over the years. Width issues made me abandon my original design, so I've settled with eventually turning this less impressive one into my own version of a doomsday machine. This should be slightly more evident by 280 at the latest.

The gems kill my FPS slightly. I would not suggest this type of design to others, though it looks kind of neat (moreso in the original plan) when seen in motion. - Priz

17. Future Industrial Complex

( 272 Early Spring to 300 )
I started on the supports for a massive, mostly wood structure that will house all my farming, smithing, and woodworking structures, along with all those directly involved with them. For some reason, trees have never grown in this area, at least on the level below this one, which I why I chose this spot. I can't afford to lose any wood-producing land at the moment. Workshops will go on this level and potentially the level above, housing will be in a structure I can presently only describe as a "protrusion" from the building's roof. I'm currently trying to think of a good way to incorperate the ponds as a source of irrigation for my farms (it rains alot around here), or as a fishing resource, but I will probably have to dig them out in the name of progress. - Priz
17. Administrator's Personal Rooms

This is the mayor's bedroom and dining-room. It's got some fancy tigereye windows, and is gradually getting iron furnishings as my mayor makes demands and mandates. His offices are one floor up, and even in 271, are admittedly pretty bare. - Priz
17. Dining Hall

This is the future site of my dining hall. It will go up a ton of levels, and eventually have a giant gold chandelier. My dwarves are pretty content with the subterrainian hall for now, and I haven't quite decided how or where to top this tower, so this isn't really a huge priority at the moment.

To the right of it is my temporary animal pens/windmills, which will probably be removed and replaced with a much larger structure in a few years. - Priz
17. Walkways and Roundtowers

The fort's surface levels will only be reachable via raised walkways.

You might have noticed all my towers have the same dimensions. This is because I play fullscreen with my tiles streached, and laying out circles this way is just a bitch to do. I'll eventually change it up a bit when I have some time and graph paper. - Priz
16. The Library

The Library, furnished with silver furniture and exceptional wood shelving. The dwarves aren't big readers, and typically use this room for eating, despite strict rules to the contrary. - Priz
15. Catacombs

( 267 Early Winter to 300 )
I like my catacombs to be maze-like and unorganized. Every skilled dwarf will eventually get their own tomb, with the small alcove coffins going to the peasantry.

The large tombs to the east are the Captain of the Guard's and the mayor's, respectively.

The north tombs in progress (starting 271) will be for my freemasons (legendary miner/mason/engravers - I think diversifing is a good thing). - Priz
15. The Mines

Not alot to see here, really. They will eventually be dug into more "natural" looking caverns than these ugly square chunks. - Priz
15. The Old Fort

This is where my whole population is housed at the moment. Barracks are to the south east, meetinghall to the north. The larger rooms on the side there are the clerk/managers' rooms, though he also happens to be the mayor right now, so they are currently unused. - Priz
15. Trade Depot

Where my trading happens for now. If you scroll around a little, you can see how completely unorganized all my industry is. :P

Main imports are metals (few of which are found on the map), and gems for the windows. Exports are more cloth than I know what to do with, and tons of animal fat. - Priz
14. The Well

This is my well. It's filled and in full use by 271 (earlier, actually, if I bother to upload the maps from 268 and such). ALOT of dwarves got killed due to water issues when I first started playing a few months ago - does it show?

Anyway, this will probably be obsoleted by an aqueduct project I'm thinking of, but all the engravings are masterwork or exceptional, so it still adds nicely to my fort value. - Priz
